This!! I can't help but buy multiples now. reason I passed on crimson guards, and a lot of the DG stuff. I figured I'd go after one figure per wave...I know if I get any figure,I'll keep buying them.for example Tony Stark from the iron man hall of armor set...I bought one set for my son,and kept the tony stark, then I bought a few cases to stuff stockings with iron man figures for the kids at a local hospital...then I just kept buying sets for tony!! I have over 20 of him now for no real reason except to have them.

I have 107 Snake Armors, just over 142 ROC Neo Vipers, around 48 25th Bats, 30 Zombie Vipers, 48 25th Crimson Guards (20 of which are Fred head versions) and around 10 to 20 of all troop builders up to but not including Retaliation. I gave up at Retaliation. I also have army builders from a lot of other li8nes. My plan is to build an ultimate battle but that will have to wait for many many years.
I do not know why I army built but i got caught up in it and I still love it, even if I am running out of space to store it all. I'm only catching up to 10 CG's, and 6 cobra troops from poc... |

My ARAH Snake Armors are around 72 the rest are Red, Blue and Black.
I do agree. I have resisted army building the 3 3/4th marvel figures for that reason. My Nephews never wanted to buy those figures because they called them, "LAME". That saved me a lot of money. As far as toys where concerned, they where experts at what was a hot toy and what was junk.

I'd love to add minty White, Blue, and Red Snake Armors to my collection, but I'm going to have to get a better job first.

There is no race. Do what you can when you can and only buy what you want to make yourself happy. Army building isn't for everyone and thats great, we all do what we do for our own pleasure. This hobby should be fun not a game of who has more. I army build because I love the fun of it even if i know i may never see all of my STUFF set up to look at. ;)

I never really built specified armies as a kid, but I had a lot of duplicates of some joe and some cobra figures, simply because I bought what I bought with my allowance, and parents saw GI Joe on the boxes at the stores and I got some Cobra..and some Joes. They just saw them as toys to keep me quiet I guess, and didn't care what I had. And I wasn't to picky either because at least 5 other kids on the block collected, and I could just trade. But I can't help but smile and cringe at the same time when I read how people talk about having battles and what not. I feel I have sinned greatly..but my battles involved a lot of testers red paint, and a single shot daisy BB gun.
One day I finally decided to play out a fantasy I've always had. Have a "real" war. I had at least 30-40 guys on each side..around a dozen or so vehicles for each side. I loaded up all my collection in a couple good sized plastic boxes, went out to the barn and upstairs where Dad told us to shoot our BB guns. I made a small Cobra base..I didn't have the Terror Dome..so thin pieces of pine planks were the walls, and old pop cans were barriers. I had the GI Joe base, so they were set up inside and around that. had troops on both sides crowding the vehicles. And I strategically placed about 8 bottles of testers paint in front of groups of troops..to represent blood. And the massacre began. About an hour later, my troops were in shambles. My vehicle's had little round BB dent marks pockmarks on them. Most of the plastic canopies were shot and shattered. Red paint were splattered all over the place, especially on the remains of troops on both sides. I did have one rule though. I only shot each guy once, if I winged him and he fell down. Ok "flesh" wound. I had a good amount of amputees..and a lot with broken chests, and faces imprinted with a small round copper BB mark. Of the my figures i think maybe 6 were just dead on shots that broke the chest cavity, rendering said figure unplayable..but instead became a organ donor. Most of them had legs shot off, some arms. Lots of dented faces. The vehicles suffered far less damage due to the sturdiness of the plastic. But as noted earlier, you could connect the dots on them. A single pump Daisy BB gun isn't all that powerful. But it did give my figures a war torn look. At least 80% of my figures had red paint plastered to them, and would remain there for the rest of their days. I had my war, I was happy. but occasionally afterwards I would scold myself for ruining my own toys..but then again I figured they were soldiers..enemies..and a showdown had to happen. Making explosive noises, and having them fall off the couch or a pile of books after being hit with an invisible bullet..and Flint yelling "Ka-Pow..I got you Storm-Shadow!" and Storm Shadow yelling back "Screw you Flint, I cut your bullet in half with my sword!" like little kids playing cowboys and indians, just didn't cut it in my mind. To this day, a part of me is glad I did it. But then a more adult and rational part of me is like..wow..what a waste of money and a lack of respect for the toys you loved so much. But in a way it sorta worked out..I ended up trading a few of my Amputee figures for some of my friends whole and un-shot figures, simply because they wanted a guy who looked like he had been in a real war. I understand this isn't really a Army Building contribution sort of post..but it just reminded me of why we build armies..and what they are for playing war, or just displaying a combat diorama..and the fact I actually decided to have one, and wanted to share my childhood enthusiasm for taking pretend war to a new level. It took me a while to replace what I shot up, and my parents never did find out. They would have beat me, and probably never buy me another Joe toy again. And that is why some figures are harder to find then others, I guess. Heh.

Generally fireteam (4), though great figures (Shock Trooper) warrant squad/section (8-14) numbers.
Anything above that seems wasteful, especially when they're all just standing around at parade rest. If you're gonna build larger units you need to invest in a LARGE diorama to display them. |
