It's the one toy line from my childhood that I haven't picked up as an adult. I think I'd buy Transformers if they were just robot mode versions of the characters that weren't compromised visually by a transformation. I know that's probably blasphemy to a TF collector, but I just want really awesome and affordable robots without some boring alt mode crapping up the looks and jacking up the price.

Incidentally, though, this is the exact reason why I have never, ever been interested in overpriced GI Joe vehicles. They're huge hunks of plastic that don't do anything. Why would I buy an expensive Jeep, when I can buy a Jeep that turns into a robot? |

Totally amazing. Gives some scope to how long and involved the process is.

Maybe the toys didn't hook me as a kid. The robot modes were just horrible, static, and ugly back then. And there was no consistency in scale, construction, or quality (I now know why that was, but I never understood it as a kid). It didn't help that they were not very compatible with my other toys. But I loved the cartoon, the movie, and the characters. I would love an Optimus Prime action figure that looked good, while being reasonably priced, the same way I have GI Joe figures, Star Wars figures, TMNT, MOTU, Thunder Cats, etc. I have no affinity for Gundam. I know that Optimus transforms into a semi. I don't need to see it. I think it's pretty dumb how the masterpiece version has two grill plates -- one for vehicle mode and one for robot mode. I know they have to do it that way to make each mode look accurate to the cartoon, but it just illustrates my point that there are a ton of compromises being made for the sake of that feature. And it's a feature that I respect, but don't personally care about. |
