After seeing G.I. Joe: Retaliation, I'm a bit puzzled on how Hasbro released their "movie" line now. Wave 1 seems to be totally from another universe, and only Wave 3 looks anything remotely like characters from the movie.
Here is my idea for how the movie line should have rolled out and maybe rebooted the Joe line from Hasbro. I left some of the figures already released or upcoming that I felt were good enough "as is". Feel free to add your 2 pennies as well. FIGURES: Wave 1 -Ultimate Roadblock* -Lady Jaye (movie poster image, with sunglasses) -Flint (movie poster image, desert fatigues) -Ultimate Duke* -G.I. Joe Trooper (desert camo, different head sculpts) -President/Zartan (suit with alternate Zartan/Nanomite head) -Presidential Guard/Zandar (suit with Cobra sigil lapel) Wave 2 -Snake-Eyes (Retaliation Wave 2 version)* -Storm Shadow (white trenchcoat version) -Red Ninja (Retaliation version)* -Jinx (red blindfold) -Blind Master* Wave 3 -Cobra Commander (movie accurate w/trenchcoat) -Cobra Trooper (urban camo)* -Firefly (moto jacket version) -Storm Shadow as Snake-Eyes (w/shackles, SS head sculpt) -Prison Trooper (black, PMC type) -Prison Warden Nigel James Wave 4 -Joe Colton (regular military fatigues) -Roadblock (tank top with tattoos) -Lady Jaye (tank top) -Flint (short sleeved) -Storm Shadow (unmasked) -"Seasoned" Joe Trooper (bearded, Tier 1 operative style) *indicates already released or upcoming figure VEHICLES: Wave 1 -Cobra Missile Cycle (movie accurate) w/Firefly -Cobra FANG Boat (movie accurate) w/Copperhead -G.I. Joe Panther CLV (desert version) w/Clutch -G.I. Joe Ghost Hawk VTOL w/Lift Ticket Wave 2 -G.I. Joe Mountain Awe Striker w/Snake-Eyes -Cobra HISS (movie accurate) w/HISS Driver -G.I. Joe Tread Ripper (movie accurate) w/Roadblock -Cobra Chopper (movie accurate) w/Cobra Air Viper PLAYSETS/3 Packs/Exclusives: -Underground Prison with three tube cells w/Cobra Commander (white prison suit with mask) -Mountain Ninja Base with suspension bridge w/Red Ninja Leader -Pakistan Assault 3-Pk (Dusty, Beachhead and Grunt) -North Korean Assault 3-Pk (Lady Jaye - Sniper, Mouse, and Roadblock - fence cutter) -TRU Exclusive - Cobra Trooper 3-Pk (2 urban camo troopers, 1 officer - Cobra black flags and standards) -Target Exclusive - Red Ninja 3-pk (2 red ninjas, 1 black ninja with red highlights) -SDCC Exclusive - Yellow Jinx* I was going to throw in the El Camino w/Joe Colton or Mountain Ninja Repair Center w/Burned Storm Shadow (with real healing herbs!)...LOL Chime in on what could have been!

After hearing Kurt Bozigian's interview on WOTJM #76, I think the packaging was a big let down (I feel for you MOTC collectors).
I would have done something with the US flag that has the Arashikage logo and Cobra sigil on it as the card art. That would have included everything - USA, Cobra and the ninja aspect. And a freaking filecard and figure stand too!!!

Retaliation was fast tracked after RoC ended, so Hasbro didn't have their usual amount of time to get figures made to go along with the movie. They didn't have final Retaliation designs to go off of and have figures on the shelf in time for the movie.
That's why the later waves are more movie accurate. They had to have something on the shelves, so we got the first wave of figures. Most likely, with the movie being delayed, the retailers didn't want to continue putting Retaliation merchandise on the shelves so they held onto the stock of wave 1 stuff they had and then started ordering later waves when closer to Retaliation launching. So Hasbro just didn't have the ability/time to have the first waves of product be movie accurate.

Well, the good (or bad) news is we don't know what to expect after Wave 3...what's in store for the rest of the year?
Could we see another Pursuit of Cobra line? Yeah, the movie figures and vehicles were lackluster (I still bought them to support the line) - could we see more movie accurate vehicles/figures coming out in the third and fourth quarter? We would have seen them by now. What I do like is how Hasbro has been throwing the collectors a bone here and there with things like the Night Landing w/Eel, Kwinn, Night Viper, and an updated Crimson Guard. I'm just lamenting the missed opportunity of a great movie line that could have re-igninted interested in the Joe line from another generation.

No repeat figs in any wave (other than SE). You did better than Hasbro. You should've left Kwinn, though.

The movie line is still out there. "Great" is subjective and so far nothing indicates that the movie line is rotting on the pegs. It seems to be doing good. Retaliation has only been out a week, if that. Give it time. They actually should have maybe pushed Retaliation back to mid-april when most schools have vacation and gotten more opportunity for the kids to see it. As for the line itself, I don't have any issues with the case assortments and figures because of the time involved and limitations Hasbro had to work with to create the figures. I think we'll see what the next iteration of Joe is at Joecon. I think there was a Plan A and Plan B depending on how Retaliation did/does. Plan A will be more Retaliation-centric stuff in the transition line to the next movie.

I sometimes wish Hasbro would go the Star Wars route and have a movie line, a cartoon line and a "classics" line for the hard core collectors on ARAH cardbacks.

Where's the missed opportunity?

Don't get me wrong, I want it to sell well - which only means more toys down the road.

The 25th, towards the end, was lagging in sales. During the non-movie releases, it's more collector-centric, because we keep the line alive. That's why it becomes hard to find, because the sales just aren't there to get retailer support. During movie releases, the collector's get stuff sprinkled so we help the overall sales. Someday maybe Joe can have multiple lines, but not now.

This comes up all the time. The answer is that Joe just does not have the sales to support this.

Someday maybe Joe can have multiple lines, but not now. G.I. Joe has a timeless recipe for succes - patriotism, heroism, villainy, elements of military with a hint of science fiction. It has prided itself on being the best "action figure" on the market - look at the 12-inch line from the 60s with the "kung-fu grip", swivel-arm from ARAH, and super detailed sculpting of the modern era. We have all the pieces - why aren't kids scooping these up by the basket load at local TRUs and Walmarts? Or have we forever doomed this as a "collector's" hobby with our buying practices and fickleness?
