So we hear that toys aren't big sellers anymore, that video games have pushed them out, and of course that is true to an extent.
But why is it that I have to search the better part of my state for Joes, and often come home empty-handed? This seems to me to be a sign of high demand. Obviously, they are in high demand enough that people will go searching for them, and that they are consistently out of stock. So why don't stores order more? Or restock the shelves? That just seems like business sense to me. If you're consistently shorthanded of product, you should order more cases. If you can't keep a hot item on the shelf, you should stock up. Does Hasbro not produce enough to meet demand? Or do stores just see pegwarmers and think it isn't worth ordering new cases? Or is it that Joes don't sell enough to warrant significant attention/employee time, creating a false image of demand? Either way, it's something that I've been thinking about for a while. Clearly, people are buying these. (I just came from the Flak/Claw and Stinger thread where people are talking about buying three or four of each- now I know I'll never see them) So why isn't demand being met? I don't notice this problem with other toy lines. |

It just doesn't seem to make business sense to me. I work in a retail store, and as soon as we get stock in the backroom, it becomes a big priority to get it out on shelves. Even if it doesn't look too pretty or is early for the season, stock in the backroom is dead weight, and empty shelves are not doing any work.
So I have to think that they just don't order any, which also doesn't make sense. Why wouldn't you order things that you quickly sell out of? |

actually i think with the closing of some chinese factories have put a pinch on new stuff i mean the stinger and flak cannon sets were put on hold and we are about to get hit with a massive amount of movie toys to boot so hasblos priority is shifting towards the movie with a few modern era mixed in
there are more people on the tank here that can shed light

I think it's a razor's edge that the stores have to walk concerning how much stuff to order and stock. Case in point, I have two Wal-Marts around here that were once empty. Then at some point I saw they started stocking a lot of Joes. Now they each have 4 full pegs of figures that no one wants. Some of this is due to revision cases like the current one going around with 2007 figures, but some of this is due to them ordering a lot of cases of an unpopular wave like wave 7. One of these stores has had over 20 Vipers since they were new.
It's hard to tell what figures are going to be well recieved by your customers when you're a general retail store |

Also stores look at figures as a number, not by character. They don't care if they have 20 hard to find variants on the pegs or 20 cobra commanders. They just know they have 20 figures and will wait for them to sell before ordering more. I'd wager they stock stores on a first come first serve basis in regards to waves, no concern for making sure every store gets ever wave.

All good answers. Whatever it is, though, it's not working. They have customers chomping at the bit to buy out their product- that's a very rare situation in retail. And they can't get their distribution straight to figure that out.

Big box retailers don't order their own stock, they get stuff sent in from a regional warehouse as they sell thru items and by what the warehouse has. Some stores in a chain naturally move more than others due to the difference in demographics. The amount of items a retailer buys from a manufacturer is determined way in advance, and there isn't always an option to order more.
