as i enjoy this "second coming" of GI JOE i am posting an "opinionated review" of each figure...this is "The Jeaux Report"
hey joes, im back with another Jeaux Report right on the heels of the SieGie Jeaux Report. this time out, im reviewing the new Iron Grenadier Destro...or as some call him "blade" Destro. now, ive said this before, way back on the serpentor review...I HATE CLOTH ON A 4" FIGURE. IG Destro is not the exception to my rule. in fact, i almost didnt keep this figure, due to the fact that i couldnt make peace with the cloth sash...but i kept trying and figured out a solution that made me happy...and im glad i did. (we'll take a look at that solution later) as i said, he almost didnt qualify as a "keeper" but i gave him a second chance, because i absolutely LOVE that particular outfit. oddly enough, the original IG Destro came out after i was officially "too old" for joes. and when the 25th version was announced as "blade" destro, i had not a clue that the heck that meant. comparing the IG to the "regular", i much prefer the IG's look. think the detail on the SieGie was at a new level?...take a look at this guy. his left boot is rolled down so it wouldnt interfere with his sidearm holster. and speaking of the sidearm holster, there is a functional strap that holds the gun in the holster! damn! (now you know why i bashed the SieGie's holster so much) the "armor" in this outfit is quite impressive...i imagine destro has succeeded in closing many a deal, whether the customer wanted to or not, in this imposing get-up. i knew from the beginning, that i didnt want destro brandishing the sword, even though it is the one thing that really sets him apart from any joe figure so far. im really happy how i was able to pose him with his right hand on the sword's grip, makes him more menacing that way. "ive got a sword, and you assume i know how to use it" kudos to hasbro for making the scabbard functional...but there is some shame to be suffered over that scabbard too....more on that in the "no roses" section. now onto that sash. cloth on a small figure, and some (if not most) larger scale figs too, NEVER behaves like real pieces of clothing. never hangs like you want/need it to. i folded it back over itself and ran a gold safety pin through the section where the fold meets the back and looped the pin around the chain for the scabbard. theres a pic of that in here too. im not 100% happy with it, but its enough to keep me satisfied. is it all roses though? never is... first off, lets revisit cloth...hate it. (now that that dead horse has been sufficiently beaten...) remember the shame over the scabbard? how un-detailed it is as compared to the 1988, vintage version. i realize that to make it functional it had to be thicker, but the scabbard and the chain holding it to his belt are disappointing in the detail dept. the vintage scabbard looks way more ornate. i had to cut the trigger and guard off of the sidearm to get it deep enough into the holster to get the "great touch" of a flap to close properly...oh, well, sometimes you gotta rob ringo to pay paul. sorry ringo. so, on the 1-5 Yo Jeaux! scale... despite a few hiccups, and a cloth belch, im happy to give Iron Grenadier Destro a solid 4. I may be in the minority here, but this is one figure I never wanted as a kid, and I'm pretty certain it's alongside serpentor in "the figures I won't buy as an adult"

This is one solid figure. I think it's almost perfect. Those that don't pick it up, might be losing out on something. Thanks for another great review Gung.Heaux!

I never had IG Destro as a kid because it looked not attractive at all. But when I saw the pictures posted about a month ago, it was fantastic. In fact, it is much better in person, and I think this is the most perfect 25th Joe figure so far.

Here's hoping I haven't been too naughty for Santa to get me wave 5 for Christmas. If he doesn't stop I guess I'll be hunting them after xmas. Then it'll be here's hoping to Hasbro to crank out high numbers so we can all get them.Actually I'd prefer Hasbro to crank out high numbers so ALL can get them. |
