My opinion is that we have a lot more standard joes and equipment to cover before Hasbro should start with the gimmic repaints. And don't even get me started on Cobra-La (the single biggest reason Joe jumped the shark the first time around).

If they did do a Cobra-La set, they would need to include Pythona as well as make Nemesis Enforcer bigger than the regular 25th joes to match his height in the movie. My vote was for the Night Force. I liked the dark deco of some of these characters more than I did the original.. Shockwave, Falcon and Crazylegs for sure.

I have mentioned this before but i wonder if hasbro would pay any attention to a fan petition for a Cobra La set, and how we could go about starting one and getting it to them? Anyone have any answers?

As for Cobra-la, if there's a petition for it, then let me be the first to sign the petition against it. Why celebrate the exact moment when GI Joe went from a fairly accurate depiction of a military unit grounded with some semblance of reality (fairly accurate weapons, interesting, believable characters and somewhat of a grounded backstory) to becoming a strange contortion of overblown genetic misfits (Cobra-la), gimics (more repaints than new characters) and strange ties with buzz causes (Eco-whatever they were, I was long gone by then)? "I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!" Why would we ever want to go back there? To me that would be like making the 2009 movie a live version of that animated piece of garbage called the original Gi Joe movie (the one where they originally intended to kill Duke, the one where Cobra-La and Big Lob got more story and face time than 99% of all the other fairly believable characters that we had all come to enjoy from the cartoon). Oh, I almost forgot, they turned Cobra Commander into a frigging SNAKE! Arrrggghhh!!! Sorry for the rant, but I have strong feelings when it comes to celebrating the exact moment and reason my favorite toy line of all time Jumped The Shark... Save the far out $#/+ for He-man and Star Wars. |

Actually gi joe was never a true millitary realistic story. In the first joe cartoon series snake eyes became glowing radioactive and survived. In the first season they had an episode about tommy talltree airbornes brother using his psy-powers as a weapon. Cobra used genetic experiments from day one with the super grow plant food to grow super plants to take over new york in the episode, "The Greenhouse effect" and it was not just in the cartoon, in the comic storm shadow magically came back to life after being shot in the chest multiple times. Cobra has been doing genetic experimentation from day one from Dr. mindbender to serpentor. Cobra La is part of gi joe lore and there are many of us out there who grew up loving the gi joe cartoon movie and I would hope a Cobra La set would include a dvd version of the movie. Hasbro remastered the transformers movie and released it in anticipation of the new live action transformers movie, I would hope gi joe would get the same treatment

However, I took exception then and now to the complete (I feel haphazard) re-definition of the origins and structure of Cobra and the taking of the franchise completely from being a battle between organized military forces and turning it into some kind of "bug hunt" that took place in the Gi Joe movie. I mean where can we even go from there? Where did Gi Joe go from there? My point is that that very decision directly led to the vast reduction in the popularity of the product from which it is really still trying to recover from. I believe that many (including myself) chose Gi Joe because of its foundations (if even loose ones) to its grounding of modern (if somewhat fictionalized) military action plain and simple, and simply lost interest once the franchise departed too far from that basis. I agree that Cobra-La is part of the Gi Joe lore. Honestly, I would call it the high water mark of the franchise (or possibly just beyond it). But I would also hold it at least partially to blame for the decline of the franchise. And yes I did have the set although I didn't have much use for the Nemesis and Globulus figs. However, the bug trooper (his name escapes me) was pretty cool looking and I did find ways to allow him to battle along side the other vipers. Maybe the reason that I'm not hot on getting a new version of Cobra-La is that, honestly, I'd hate to see it happen all over again. Last edited by thunderdan19; 12-08-2007 at 12:15 AM.. |
