Is the GIJCC encouraging "scalping" the FSS figures that you do not want?
Earlier I was reading some of the comments on the GIJCC Facebook page when I came across this. A member by the name of Joseph posted this on their Facebook page... "Joseph: I only want two of these figs. To bad there so expensive." Then the GIJCC answers with the following... "G.I. Joe Collectors' Club @Joseph - You can always sell the extra figures you don't want and likely finance the figures you wish to keep." Now I know that anyone who buys anything from anywhere can do what they want with their purchases just as long as they are obeying the law. I also know that after any company sells their product and has their money in hand they can care less about how much it re-sells for on the secondary market. With that said the only reason I am posting this is due to the usual bickering going on in the FSS thread right now. I know we all hate scalpers and never want to pay scalper prices, but if the company that is selling the items is condoning it why not. Morally I feel that scalping is bad amongst fellow collectors on a site like this, but as far as an auction goes on a site like eBay, where it's open to anyone to freely bid up to how much they want to pay, then I guess to each their own. If you post a figure at cost for the starting of the bidding process and people bid way over cost then they are the ones driving up the price, not the scalpers. To me the scalpers are the ones who list the item for double or tripple the price right off the bat. This is just my opinion though. I'm still not sure I want in on the FSS because I only want about 4 of the figures or so. If I were to get it I would try to trade away the ones I didn't want, or sell the ones I didn't want just to get back what I put in. I'm sure I would have many takers for the Nano B.A.T. The whole scalping thing is a touchy subject around here, but I think that people go a bit overboard on the subject. At the end of the day I have no problem with someone putting something up on eBay in order to get top dollar, but on the other hand I don't want to see it done on sites like this where we should be helping each other out. Oh well I guess people will be arguing about this to the end of days.

They only care that they are making money. Don't expect anything else.

I want Covergirl and Iron Klaw, but I cannot afford to pay for figures in advanced, so I am skipping on this.

Pretty sure people who scalp toys do not need encouragement... something else is driving them... something deeper... something very, very...

BigBadToyStore is offering pre-orders on individual figures, though a few of the most popular(Cover Girl, etc) have already sold out. The prices are pretty scalperiffic, but if you don't want to drop the 3 bills, it might not hurt. I contacted BBTS to see if they would be getting more in stock of the "pre-order sold out" figures and they said if they sell enough of the other characters to warrant purchasing more subscriptions they would gladly do so.

I've been thinking about this and the "scalper" thing doesn't apply. These aren't scarce. They'll make as many as people buy subscriptions.
What this is, is speculation. A large portion of these are going to be bought because people think they will sell on eBay for a lot more money. And presumably they will. And those early successes will fuel more subscription sales for the second round. But at some point the interest will decline. And the speculators will be sitting on hundreds if not thousands of dollars of unsellable merchandise. And the next subscription round will struggle. This is exactly what happened to MOTUC. Huge success out of the gate. Sub was flying high. Then this year Mattel packed in too many undesirable figures at too high price points and the speculators were unable to sell most of their figures for much above MSRP and decided against renewing. Mattel was barely able to get the next subscription off the ground. They literally had to plead with their fanbase to subscribe. So, if the Club is looking to get a lot of profit quick, good for them, this is the right way to do it. If they're thinking of this as a long term continuing business, encouraging speculation is stupid. And engaging in speculation, nothing inherently wrong with that. But don't get fooled the easy money will last forever. If you see signs the subscription system is failing, jump out. |

I wouldn't really say they're encouraging scalping. Telling someone to sell the figures they don't want does not necessarily mean to sell the figures for 3x the original price because someone might be desperate enough to pay it.
All I got from that was sell the figures you don't want and put the money towards the ones you do. Hell you said it yourself, sell the figures you don't want to breakeven on what you put in for it. As for the whole scalping thing, I understand that sometimes people might need the money and they put a hard to find figure up at a rather high price, but sadly there is no way of telling what the case is in most situations like that. Really it's the buy 15 Shadow Trackers and sell them at 40$ each on e-bay people that bother me most. Really I doubt the FSS will have the same problem since figures are made to order. Worst case is a ton of scalpers might end up with a bunch a figures they can't resell because the figures will be so common. It's not like Hasbro has anything to worry about since the figures are made to order and they're still getting payed, if the scalpers cancel their subscription, then they just have less figures to make next time.

I wonder if the breakdown will happen a lot sooner with the FSS... there are a number of figures that it seems almost nobody wants. I suspect there will be a flood of them on eBay when they ship, and a lack of buyers. Mainly thinking TNT, Sure Fire, and Quarrel here. Big Boa and Cover Girl will sell very well. I really hope the club decides to make a ton extra of these two... there are going to be a lot of people who really only want them. Last edited by poddie; 08-11-2012 at 04:22 AM.. |
