Pfft, If Halo and the Sports Picks lines weren't keeping them afloat they'd probably have gone the way of Palisades and Resaurus by now. Giant? Hardly. |

There are quite a few varied opinions on this. I wouldn't be surprised if a little bit of each of them have contributed to the current situation.
I guess what I find more than a little bit frustrating is in this day and age of easy global communication and access to a type of retail not available when i was a kid, that I still can't find what I'm looking for. With all of the people I know, with all of the forums, I can't post "Will someone pick up the Mando chick for me? I'll pay the cost plus shipping." And it's not because no one wants to, it's because no one else can find her either. And yeah, I understand some of that is due to scalpers. When I was your age, the only thing people scalped were tickets to concerts and sporting events. |

I don't know.
I still remember the pain of working all day stacking tree branches and hauling them down to the local dump with my best friend and his father so that we could each earn a new Cobra Ninja figure. That afternoon we walk into the local toy store with our $3.25 each (got to have enough to cover tax) only to be disappointed that there was no sign of the newest and coolest looking figure on our Joe Cardbacks. We ended up going home with some Sabotage guy with a cool walkie talkie and a mask that at least made him "look" like a ninja (little did we know). But I remember that there was no recourse. No friends to follow up with on the 'Tank to help in my search, no getting to drive to 20 different stores, no Amazon, no eBay to turn to. If they didn't have it at the toy store that was close enough to ride your bike to, or at Gemco when your mom went grocery shopping, then you were SoL. Heck, even Toy R Us was a shining jewel your mom only took you to on your birthday. We've got it so good these days. There are so many figures I've picked up because I have opportunities I never had as a kid. Not to mention that there are so many more figures available versus in the golden days when there were only 10 or so figures to buy each year.

For me (in the mid-80s growing up), I had the luxury of living in a small town that had a Wal-Mart as well as a few other mom and pop stores that carried them. Also, strangely enough, we had an auto parts store named Western Auto that carried Joes. They were all fairly close to each other (it was a small town in MS that had like 5k people), so it wasn't hard to track 'em down.

Well, I never had a legion of thirty somethings trying to thwart my collecting.

Sure there were! They were called dealers, and comic shops, and if you went to toy convention or one of these shops you could pay a collector markup. eBay has only amplified the practice.
