The USS FLAGG IS the biggest playset ever, so how do you beat that? Would RAH fans want just a re-issue or something better? If better, what would be better?
Ive actually gone and built a larger carrier out of plastic stand alone shelves and foamboard (not gatorboard-at least not yet) My suggestion would be to use Gator board which it suprisingly strong and light weight and quite cheap. Gator board is used to make all kinds of durable stand-ups and advertising media and used in the making of dioramas. The new carrier could be done using large interlocking pieces. The main superstructure could be a case that opens up and allows for play on the interior section of the opening case. Very similar to the USS FLAGG, this carrier would actually be able to be adjusted in size-whether you want 7 foot carrier or one that is 14 foot, the gator board would have reversible sides to allow for extension or shortening. Simple clips would allow the flight deck to be uniform. Granted it seems large but here comes the best part, by using the plastic, free-standing build a shelfs from home depot or other, you could make an interior with flooring as well as as sections that act as a cover/skin of the ship that could be applied with adhesive velcro strips that allow for an attatchment to the structure of the shelves. Is it grandiose? Yes, but then so was the Flagg. This simple version allows fans to take thier carrier with them to a picnic, nieghbors/grandmas house and easy set up allows for play wherever. Ive used foam board that is 3/16 thick and is 4' by 8' and granted it seems huge but considering the fact that A-this is a carrier, its suppose to be big, B-its a different version than the FLAGG and far lighter and far cheaper. C-this could open up to other types of ships like a destroyer or something else. D-once finished there is always somewhere to place the toys, the shelves are already there, I have two shelves high by 3 shelves long and its quite interesting what you can pack on there, I currently have 5 PTE F-18s and 2 Skystrikers and 1 Blackhawk helicoper-that's just on the top deck. Hangar deck below is currently carrying 1 PTE F-18 and 7 Skystrikers. There is alot of room for accessories, different figures like the flight deck crew, the Boss and Lil Boss, mechanics and other hard working enlisted folk. It may be just foamboard and wild wishes but I do know its doable and considering the cost of a new FLAGG, I think it merits some consideration-One could even sell extra or special panels via HASBROTOYSHOP.COM that would make it even more detailed. The entire ship could be basically packed up like a large set of cards with a carry case that is the superstructure. Also this could open up the doors to make your own dioramas like hangars or fortresses, simple gator board with a picture applied could allow for many amazing backdrops/locations. GI JOE is character driven, fans identify with the different characters, why not bring an iconic playset back into play? With the host of aircraft and other vehicles coming, a carrier play/display set would really be appreciated not only by fans but by mom/dads/housewives/girlfriends everywhere. This is just a suggestion, I see the USS FLAGG as a great playset, I just wanted to take it one step further and allow a cool playset become part of one's collection or a cool addition to a kid's room. I have a few other things that I want to do before I put up pics but the idea of using general use rubbermaid garage shelves and creating a large playset-whether its up against a wall or standing alone. I noticed someone here had made a Cobra ship with plastic boxes-add some cardboard and painter's tape brother, give it some shape. With new figures and vehicles on the horizon, Im hoping we see some cool stuff from Hasbro and the GI JOE line, movie and 25th. Tell me what you liked and didnt liked and what you would like to see if the CARRIER were to be done. Last edited by SgtMajor; 11-05-2008 at 10:23 PM.. |

All in plastic hard plastic so transporting will not be an issue. Also maybe use this as Ulitmate Naval Battle Pack, the Flagg Vs the Montana; with that one put up Cobra Insignias and flags along with special edition Mirage Plane or Night Raven.

That's why I like the foam board (hoping for gatorboard-more sturdy), boxes could still be used, the foamboard just goes on top to make it level-for guns/superstructures/rattlers-whatever. Still, it was a way to put it together, lightweight and portable. I could definately see where the guy was going with it.

I think the old one would weigh quite a bit, I have only one panel of the deck, the rear, and it is quite hefty. Granted, it has taken a beating over time and has held up well. What would you want to see updated on the FLAGG/Carrier? The superstructure? Or...

That's a thought L.O.C., not sure if I want to risk my RAH Skystrikers for some actual naval duty, would be cool tho. You could definately use some PTE boats and Morays and Whales(once converted) with that floating carrier.

Part of the fun of the 25th Anniversary is to revel a little bit in our childhoods. Leave it alone - just make the pieces a little more sturdy and I am all in.

Seriously? 14 f***in' feet!? If I had my way, it would be made from 3 yr aged sharp cheddar and $100 bills and I'd get a bunch of them free.
