The new 2008 Fire bat as well as the original 1986, and then the later 1988 Fire bats were all red. Why does season one of the original Sunbow GI Joe cartoon always show the Bat in grey? It appears in many episodes and it is always grey. Why is this? Did maybe the cartoon make up the Fire Bat first, and then Hasbro made a toy from the cartoon?
Anyone know the answer to this? |

The cartoon was essentially a 22 minute commercial for the Hasbro toy line. Hasbro has creative rights to the characters and vehicles. I think the gray firebat was just a mistake or possibly due to some creative differences. Or maybe Hasbro initially intended to release it in gray and then changed their minds. Wouldn;t be the first time a figure/vehicle change was made after having been initially designed.

I thought you were talking about B.A.T.'s
Interestingly enough, drop "fire" from the first post and that's my question. Some B.A.T.'s are grey, some red. What gives?

In the Baroness' case, it was obvious that the comic designed her first, since she appeared in the first issue in '82. The Rattler and Firebat looked a lot like their final toy designs and appeared, if I recall correctly, maybe a year before they were released (approximately)? So I'm guessing Hasbro had these in the design stages somewhere and the cartoon based their appearances on that. Maybe Hasbro's designers had originally wanted the Firebat in grey or something, before changing their mind before it was actually released.

You're on the right track, but take a look at some of those episodes with the grey Firebat. They occurred in the 1985 character season, but the Firebat was released in 1986. The Firebat, unlike most figures and vehicles, first appeared in the cartoon series. A couple other examples come to mind, such as the Baroness and the Rattler. In both examples, the final toy/cartoon design was quite different than what Sunbow first showed us.
