My wife went in to Dollar General and they had G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra mini figures on clearance. They said they are making room for new product but did not know for sure it would be for more Joes.

I've been hearing on this site lately that there's the expectation figures will hit domestic (read: USA...) Dollar Stores, but is this based on anything from Hasbro or just wishful thinking?
Why would Hasbro dilute their brand in this fashion when they can move excess product through their already established TJ Maxx et al process at a higher price point? I'm not being a jerk (at least I think I'm not.. but I really have not seen anything to suggest this is just fantasy talk, except now someone shows up with UPC codes for it, making it seem more concrete that this is actually going to happen. Did I miss some important piece of info somewhere? |

^^^JERK!
I think General's Joes reported it. And if there's any news and rumor site to trust, that's the one. Dudes track record is just about flawless. I heard elsewhere that they were shipping this week I think. So hopefully we will see them soon.

Also, my thoughts on "diluting the brand" (not that anyone cares but whatever):
I think this might be a really neat way to expand the line, actually. This way, the core characters are always available and for a lesser price point. Then, the main line (whatever comes post-Retaliation) can expand the character base without having to worry about all the characters that collectors are so tired of.

XSwamijayX, thanks for filling me in. I really only haunt THIS site for Joe intel, and I felt like I was out of the loop on this one.
Re: line diluting, what I meant was that it seems unlikely Hasbro would be interested in putting out a set of single carded figures for $1.00 each, albeit ones that have been off the shelves for some time now, just to preclude the idea of people waiting for the price to drop on the newer product. Not saying they WOULDN'T do that, just that it seems unlikely that they would put that expectation in people's minds. |

I don't think they will be a dollar. It's "Dollar General," not Dollar Tree. Dollar General stores are not $1 for everything you see. They just sell things cheaper--I'm expecting $6 a figure. I'm not sure, but maybe Dollar General is one of those stores known for finding a lot of left over product that didn't sell the first time, ala Big Lots, apparently with some exclusive items?

Oh, and I thought I was hearing Family Dollar, as well as all of our random drug stores?

It's not diluting the brand. You have to think about demographics. Who shops at dollar stores, Walmarts and Targets? Typically, there are different income demographics that hit each type of store. There's an untapped audience at dollar stores that would buy a lower cost gijoe toy that they may not be able to afford at big box retailers. It's profitable by using older existing molds, generic cards and popular well known characters. This is a win for Hasbro and a win for us since most people liked the POC designs and get more of that here. I'm going to buy everything I see in the dollar stores where I'll cherry pick maybe five figures from the retaliation line.

Hasbro CANNOT support sub-lines within a brand.
I mean, look at Transformers, Marvel and Star Wars toys. Hasbro only EVER produce ONE main figure line for each and don't have multiple types of toys - let alone figures - because if they did, everybody would get confused and not know which line to buy!!! [sarcasm off]
