Hey gang. I know many of us have 30th Skystrikers in our collections. And many of us also have multiples too. I just joined the "have multiples" category today thanks to Dave Viper.
I know a bunch of you have had sticker placement issues, as I have found and read through a bunch of threads/posts about it on multiple sites. The 6 each of the #11 sticker is the big issue. I decided to do some serious research on sticker placement so I could set up Ace's Skystriker as best I could. I wanted to be sure I paid homage to vintage, followed a little of the 30th instructions, followed Naval specs a little, kept the Sunbow cartoon in mind, and made an overall nice looking jet. Here is a list of the things I researched in order to place the stickers correctly... - Vintage Skystriker label placement sheet (from the blueprints) - 30th Skystriker label placement sheet (on the back of the assembly instructions) - Naval specifications from F-14 pictures (found while doing my Pukin' Dogs F-14 custom) - Shin Densetsu's review thread - 30th Skystiker review at General's Joes website - WWII aircraft nose art After compiling all of my research and following a rule that I have had my entire life while putting stickers on toys... "Stickers MUST be placed where they don't look stupid, run off corners, cover other stickers, look overly crooked, or run across indentions... unless it can't be helped!" ... I was then ready to start working on my new Skystriker. NOTE: The ONLY stickers used from Cobra Stickers were the pilot names. Everything else is from the Hasbro 30th sticker set. One of the rules I have for Skystriker stickers that use the red and black stickers that go around the canopy (or yellow/black from the ROC style set, or just black from the Cobra Stickers sets) is that they MUST touch as best they can. No gaps! I think I did pretty well using the Hasbro sticker set. I chose the "arrow" stickers on top of the venting port as an homage to the vintage Skystriker. The 30th sheet gives you the "arrow" as well as the Navy F-14 style box with "venting" on it. A simple nitpick I have is the "Rescue" arrow and access box on the side of the nose area of the jet just under the front of the canopy. The stickers should have come as one piece in the proper placement as I have seen a few people have placed them in odd configurations. The "Rescue" arrow should point to the box like I have done. This is a military specification as the arrow points to the hatch ("box") where ground personnel can open the hatch and pull a lever that blows the canopy off the jet for a ground based rescue. I chose to place the "Aces High" art on the nose of the Skystriker as an homage to WWII aircraft. The decal is way too small to be used on the tail of the jet as the 30th sticker placement guide shows. IMHO that is. You can also see in the pic above that I used one of the Sticker #11s on the starboard side of the nose. This is the one that refers to the ordinance and fuel. I felt it appropriate to place the sticker here since real life F-14s have the in-flight refueling probe just above where I placed the sticker. Another thing I noticed while doing F-14 research of real Navy jets and also during my time in the Air Force (while on paint detail for F-15s) is that the NO STEP stickers need to be placed where someone walking on top of the jet for maintenance purposes/etc can see the markings as they go out on to the wings and/or elevons. This is in contrast to vintage and 30th sticker sheets. I chose military specifications in that case. Another thing I did (see pic above) is I placed both of the "wing position" stickers behind the lever that moves the wings and landing gear. Hasbro moved the lever forward on the 30th Skystriker so there really is no location to place the "wings closed" sticker in front of the lever. I placed the stickers so they still could give the user an idea of that effect you get by moving the lever. I used the other set of #11 stickers (Pneumatic Hatch Release) underneath the jet next to each of the landing gear. I figured since the gear run pneumatically and there are 3 of them (compared to 3 of this particular sticker) that it was a win/win for me. The other 2 #11 stickers (ordinance and fuel) are placed along the jet intakes (see pic above just above the centerline gun pod). This made sense as the jet is refueled in that area and munitions are loaded in that area too. One of the minor things I noticed is the WALKWAY sticker placement compared to what I saw on pictures of Navy F-14s. The vintage Skystriker placement chart shows 2 stickers along the top of the intake, and the last one turned sideways along the venting port. Navy F-14s and the 30th sticker sheet show all 3 WALKWAY markings/stickers placed along the top of the intake. (see the first picture above) I placed my stickers on this particular jet as an homage to the vintage Skystriker. Closing: I know I am being super-anal-retentive about this, but I figured if I took the time to come up with this scheme for my jet, I should post it. Also this may be a helpful guide for those of you who have not yet "stickered" your Skystriker yet. Thanks for taking the time to read this. If you have any questions about what I chose to do or where/how I placed stickers not mentioned or pictured here, let me know. I'll help in any way I can. ***Side NOTE: Here is a pic of my Pukin' Dogs Skystriker so you can compare some of the placement (I'll post better pics of this later)***

It's nice to see someone put some care into what seems like basic customization, but is actually a laborous process. It's also nice to see someone else care about where the Rescue and No Step stickers should go. Hasbro's sticker guides are pretty free form at best and it's not uncommon to find conflicting placement suggestions on differing planforms on the same sheet. If no one else thanks you, I do.

Thank you for the effort you put into this DarthDrew. I actually have the day off to finally put a few of my skystrikers with skickers, they've been flying bare for a bit.

now I kinda wanna mail you one of mine and have you do the sticker placement. looks perfect.
I am still a little confused as to why the blue is two different colors. the "gi joe" logo stripe is clearly blue, but the wing stripes are clearly purplish, weird. you know, I'm also still in shock we even got this thing. I don't care what anyone says, hasbro kicks butt. Last edited by Dragasses; 04-29-2012 at 01:21 PM.. |

I'm up for stickering your jet Dragasses! I can't cover any of the shipping though. (sorry) I'd even do whatever custom job if you wanted some Cobra Stickers on it (like my Pukin' Dogs jet). LMK what you think.
I still have 1 more Skystriker to sticker, but it's getting a wing-mod first. Then it'll get the yellow and black stripes, Flint's name and nose art, the eagles on the tail, and the same star and stripes logo on the sides of the canopy and wings like the one above (I don't ever plan on using the ROC star and stripes logos). For the wing-mod, I want to use Super Flanker's connecting rod on the wings as that doesn't cut into the jet. I like Shin Densetsu's mod, but you have to chop off the engine area and have the gear down and the gear-doors up. Not my cup of tea.

Yeah, I goofed on my typing. I meant to say that I prefer my gear doors open while the gear is down, oddly enough. Sorry for the confusion.
