I wouldn't go too dark, the lighter the better IMO. I had a room displaying a bunch of reptiles years ago and thought it would be cool to paint the walls dark green, sort of like a jungle. Well once I got everything in there it was just way too dark, you had to be up really close to see anything. I assume any kind of display room would be similar.

A dark colour. Navy blue, a deep blood red, or green would be best. The colours on the figures/cards would pop against a dark background.

I used a darker green for mine. With the lighting it really look's good.

Avocado green works real well while giving it a elegant mature look. Those shelves are great. Where did you get them and what was the cost per unit.
