I thought the air force and congress nixed any chance of sale of f-22s to a foreign country, even allies. The last i heard Australia was the closest to getting them and trying very hard to lobby congress to allow sales of the plane, but again last i heard, it was still ours only.

Licensed Japanese production, a standard requirement for other Japanese fighter deals, would be unlikely – or extremely limited if allowed.

Sort of defeats the purpose of having an air superiority fighter if everyone has them

We sold F-14s to Iran, so there is no such thing to stop them from selling said aircraft to who ever they wish. It's a buisness and with approval from the government they can sell it (or accidnetal leak info like we did to china and ballistic missiles). We certainly don't want our allies choosing to purchase aircraft from out enemies such as China/Russia. There were aspects of them that remained classified and even if they did get thier hands on it, Lockeheed can control what parts or other information be limited to prevent them form ever keeping them in the air. They did this with the Iranain F-14s with parts for repairs and weapons systems.
As for the F-35, they are VTOLS for various branches like the Marines, Airforce and Navy. I always viewed it as the el cheapo aircraft to unify all branches that use aircraft in a simple cost effecitve replacmenet. It then can be "cookie-cutted" out to other allie countries like the F-15 and F-16 and AV-8 Harriers. The F-22 was deisgned to answer the newer Flankers and Berkuit fighters from our arch-nemsis Russia (Soviets if your cold war era born) to mantain super power status in regards to aircraft air superiority roles. But an interstin gpoint here, how many other coutries use the A-10 Warthog? I have vener looked but I don;t recall ever seeing that under a different flag so who knows...LOL |

I think the possibility for F-22 export was the early block fighters, not the most advanced ones. They would also strip out proprietary US classified avionics packages and other "stuff" that the later versions of the fighter would integrate.
