I just checked out the MOTUC reveals over on He-man.org, and my sentiment, along with many other fans thus far is pretty much, "eh!". Spikor is great (but kind of expected), along with the Snake men army builders, but alot of these reveals left me feeling much like the Retaliation reveals. It had me wondering if this is a greater reflection on the state of the economy since companies seem to be holding back on new sculpts and toolings in favor of replaints/retools that represent a smaller financial commitment. As we all know here retools are nothing new with Joes, but alot of the stuff I have seen thus far coming out of Toy Fair are leaving feeling much less enthused than in previous years. I cant help but think the economy is to blame for the "vanilla" offerings. Thoughts?

I don't think so. The 30th product totally kicks all ass. Did anyone think the movie line would be better than the awesomeness that was just created? At some point, it becomes very difficult to top what you've done previously- GI Joe is in that spot with 30th complete and Retaliation on tap, at least from an "impress the grown men who obsess over plastic" perspective. Let's hope kids buy Retaliation so we get awesome 35th anniversary stuff.

I'm new to the old He-man collections and stuff but am I right in thinking that they are releasing characters based on the new adventures of He-man the short lived 90's show? sorry if this is off topic. but I did take a peak at those new he-man figures and I don't see what you mean they look more articulated then the old ones ?

It is not the economy it is consumer buying habits.
somehow along the line, it became ingrained in people's heads that new is better. So instead of one line that is released for the whole year (of any product) It has become the norm especially in electronics, that the old line will soon be obsolete so give me something subpar because in a year or even 6 months I will be replacing it. So companies don't make lasting products. Companies jump on that kind of mentality and force out new products constantly, look at gum. or even M and M's and the ridiculous new flavors they spit out year after year only to see them die. I think something similar is happening here. perhaps the philosophy is that consumers will want movie toys but then after June and the movie is gone, they won't care any more. It will be "old news" So they make movie toys with less articulation and details because after June it will be a "dead" line. It is even worse with collectors. Especially when we are overdosed with previews of figures. The news keeps us satisfied for a week at most then we are already looking to see what new things are on the horizon. If we keep asking for fresh things and keep asking more and more often it just perpetuates the cycle.

I think this year's reveals were stellar. I can hardly wait for all of the new toys coming out this year.

I wouldn't blame the economy, but rather lack of creativity. The collectors of this stuff are all in our 30's and 40's demand them to keep making the same characters over and over and over again rather than actually come up with something new and exciting that might actually spark a new generation of fans.
Remember, the definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing and expecting different results. |

You can pretty much blame the economy for anything. As for He-man.org... I'm not good enough for them because I don't have one of the three magical e-mail providers that they accept.

To a degree, absolutely. I think the economy has had a negative impact on every industry ESPECIALLY those industries far away from necessity, like our beloved toy industry.
With the job situation being what it is, along with food, gas, power and everything else getting more and more expensive, the average familys budget for toys HAS to be a large part of the conversation when discussing a lines profitability at hasbro hq...but i think that only effects and answers for the piss poor disribution lately. I think hasbros retaliation effort, which im fine with btw, shows that theyve finally figured out that kids honestly dont care about the crap most tankers write them angry letters over. And, with likeness costs and paramount royalties now in the picture, hasbro's trying to make their share out of this knowing NOTHING they could have done would have saved them from the dedicated 80s portion of the fanbase being pissy. Half the tank was going to complain regardless of figure quality JUST BECAUSE a character doesnt looks like they always have, and 75% of whoevers left want to wait for them to hit bargain bins just like last time. Hasbro knows they cant win with collectors, so this time it looks like theyre trying to win with kids that just want cool toys.
