ROC is what really hurt us. A lot of retailers cooled off of the Gi Joe brand significantly as a result of the film and it's lackluster selling of the merchandise.
With that being said, I've noticed that Gi Joe Retaliation sculpting is more in line with the 30th and POC than trying to be super realistic like the on-screen counterparts. The figures themselves are great. In my opinion, the figures are superior in every way to ROC. I bought just a few ROC figures, I'll buy more Retaliation figures. The bad news though is that the vehicles are dreadful. Hasbro has to be efficient with the vehicles because brick and mortar stores are still sour on ROC and these take up shelf space. Therefore, this is why you're going to get Hasbro using old molds. It's just smart from a cost point-of-view. The Ghost Hawk II and the Hiss Tank look awful though. The launchers are terrible. They sucked back in the 1990s and they just suck now. And the launchers are still on the vehicles. It's super funny because you know it's a gimmick because Star Wars and Transformers do not have launchers. I'm surprised they did not re-color the SkyStriker for Retaliation and add some launchers onto that. I bet the executive at Hasbro who said back in the '90s that launchers would be awesome, STILL works at Hasbro and has some data that says launchers sell more. That drives me crazy. Last but not least, the packaging sucks. It looks like some middle schoolers were given Adobe Photoshop and 15 minutes to make packaging for the retaliation line. It looks like something you'd see from the Go-Bots or The Corps but worse. Geez Hasbro, did you let an intern design the packaging? Last but not least, the exclusives are the super-awesome part of the line. And yeah, I'll gripe, it will be hard for a majority of us to get it. That makes no sense..... |

Well. Ignoring the posters who added nothing but snotty comments, people have made some good points on this thread. I would like to share a posting from another board with you all. This poster, named: "Arrow" works on animated series and has actually worked directly with Hasbro on a few occasions. Here is what he had to say:
"ARROW wrote: Yeah, the missile launchers are a head-scratcher now......as we've just have about a year and a half of GIJOE product largely WITHOUT such gimmicks ( only in vehicles) and my assumption is their exclusion wasn't a detriment. So why now? Does a movie line automatically mean spring-loaded missile launcher filler gimmicks? Is the brand now saying that " oh, this is a MOVIE line, therefore its aimed at kids. POC wasn't aimed at kids." To that I'd say " Huh??!" It's almost like a sort of manic-depressive thing going on--when there's no movie or big push going on, nobody seems to give much of a crap about GIJOE and so the brand can try some experiments, do some cool stuff. But when a movie does come around, the brand gets tightened down, thinking becomes entrenched and ........well, the "politics" seem to get turned on because there's more exposure. And if that is the case, man that sucks. To no-one in particular, and to ask out-loud; what part of Pursuit of Cobra sucked, and what part of it doesn't still work, in the context of a toy-line relative to the movie? The single figures are looking somewhat dandy......but they are betraying cheapness with diminishing POAs. POC was about 2 years of doing everything just about right. Missile launchers are a dictation--someone at some corporate level is saying: " the kiddies like to shoot things, so give'em some crap that really shoots!". And yet for 2 years......figures didn't have that......and yet they still appeared to sell. The gimmick instead was 3-4 more guns, instead of a spring-loaded item. Pfft. Make some more tooling of nifty weapons.......that can be re-used again and again down the line. Those missile launchers will see one.........maybe two uses......and then are trash. Does anyone else see the sense..........the nonsense in this?? Its like the Hasbro brand has had some kind of brain-seizure, like they have been hamstrung part of the way through the creation of the movie line. Like someone came along and said it all has to be done for EVEN LESS this time around. I think its mud-sucking the product, and I think its short-term gutless thinking. Its not going to do the health of the brand any good over the long term." |

Hasbro is treating G.I. Joe no different than it treats any of its other toylines. it is considering its target market and then developing the toyline accordingly to minimize costs.
just because it doesn't appeal to a specific sect of existing Joe consumers does not mean they are doing anything out of the ordinary. in fact, it can be argued that what Hasbro has done with the brand up to now is what was out of the ordinary. I just don't see a problem with the Retaliation toyline. I'm not interested in it, but I also understand that Hasbro isn't making this toyline to cater to me the way they did the 30th Anniversary. will they take my money if I happen to like it? absolutely. do they care if they lose it if they capture the target market they are aiming for? absolutely not. |

Its not going to do the health of the brand any good over the long term." Around me, even the Renegades wave 1 figures sold briskly during the holdiays as the 25th line sold well before ROC came along. All pretty much sans missile launchers/gimmicks. The cost cutting is unnecessary because the missile launchers cost a significant amount of money to make (I think I remember reading the ROC missile launchers added over a dollar to each figure, and those were less elaborate than the huge Retaliation ones). So it seems to me articulation was sacrificed in favor of adding these monstrosities. I remember back in 1991 when one of the first figures with a missile launcher (Red Star) came out. It was sort of cool. But when every single figure has one, it got lame really really quick. The same is true here. They also could have designed them better (like the one that came with the POC Viper). |
