This weekend I finally got a Crimson Hiss tank. I've avoided the Hiss for this long, and I only ended up buying it because my 4 year old son insisted. For some reason, he just HAD to have it.
Anyhow - get it out - put it together - and to my surprise, the thing is AWESOME. And not just AWESOME design wise and playabilty wise - but its also BIG and STURDY. Never would've thought that, based on the pics I've seen. Even being a collector - I never thought the Hiss looked like it was worth $20... maybe $15 tops. Now, I could easily see it retailing for $25. Got me to wondering - has the closed-box packaging been hurting the vehicle sales? I could easily see the Hiss selling better if kids and parents could SEE and FEEL how good it is. Same with the Skystriker. Why in the world is that thing not flying off the shelves? Its a great vehicle - and a big vehicle too. If it was packaged - fully constructed - in an open-front box, ala JvC era - would it sell better? Opinions? |

hmm... good point.
As older collectors, we prefer the closed box because it is reminescent of our youth, and how products were packaged in the '80's. Now, everything is pre-fabbed, and rubber banded in an action pose inside a box. Good question. I would say no, though. They just aren't appealing to kids, because there is no transport mechanism properly advertising to them. No regular TV show, no kid friendly comic, no movie in several years... Not like the 1980's, where there were constant TV commercials, a well-respected comic book that was Comics Code approved for kids, one of the most popular children's cartoons of all time, and a variety of random media channels to properly distribute advertising to children. Now, like it or not, it is mainly adult collectors.

I think they might sell better if they were open box style like the Target Rattler and Conquest were during the 25th line but the prices would go up for the amount of cardboard and window material they'd have to use, not to mention Hasbro has stated that they won't be using plastics in their packaging now so they'd have to have someother type of clear thin covering to do this.

I like the closed box, but I'm always weary that someone may have swapped something.
I do like the window boxes cause I like to display them in there. However, I can't stand that they put some stickers on the vehicles at the factory. That's one reason I didn't pick up anymore 25th HISS Tanks. None of them have the stickers straight and I don't wnat to buy repro stickers for every one I get.

Bro if you want to get to the root of what is plaguing vehicles you have to look at the price and start form there. I personally think the vehicles would sell better if they were priced more accordingly. However, we are in the age where everything all the way down to a useless toy is overpriced.

Remember though, retailers tend to price point based on package size. If that HISS were assembled and packaged in a display box it might get $5-$15 added to its price.

Window boxes might also increase shipping costs because they take up more space. It could also be that retailers are pushing for the closed box *because* it takes up less space. This isn't just for Joe. When was the last time you saw a window box for a Star Wars vehicle that wasn't a store exclusive?

However, the fact that none of the 25th HISS tanks I find right now have nicely placed stickers, I just don't want to buy any of them, even though they are $7 each only. I would be all for window boxes if they left all the stickers off. However, for nostalgia, I really do like the new packaging, but like I said, I'm weary of swappers, which is why when I bought my Skystriker in the US, I opened it up right after getting it to make sure everything was there when I got to the car. Didn't want to find out when back home in Canada that something was missing or swapped.
