As we approach Toy Fair 2012 and the prospect (thank god for the new movie) of some epic Joe goodness, I was inspired to look back at some of the initial Pursuit of Cobra revelations from 2010.
I can't believe how big a step forward this was for the brand. While certainly not every piece was a homerun, Hasbro built on the new buck and ran forward with, basically, a love letter to the adult collector. I soon as they started showcasing the PoC renditions of our favorites, I was, and remain, super stoked about this line. PoC (and the ongoing 30th) has totally usurped the 25th collection for me, which I basically now view as an mediocre (in hindsight) evolutionary stepping stone to this new Joe paradigm of detail and accessorization. This is not to crap on the 25th entirely (loved it at the time, fully), but very few of those figures can co-exist with the PoC and onward for me. It's also (as always) interesting to note how different the pre-prod pieces are from the end results. I have to say, I like some of the coloring on these pre-prod figures (Alley Viper, Zartan and Jungle Viper especially.) Official G.I. I agree. POC and now the 30th is truly amazing. I still fancy my 25th figures though even in light of the recent advancements/improvements made in the line.

PoC represents what G.I. Joe is to me, but at the same time I want to see a continuation of ARAH. The military aspect is wonderful, but the creativity and imagination of ARAH is something that is incredibly special. I hope that PoC will be the platform for future G.I. Joe lines. It's my favorite G.I. Joe line as a whole and it ended too soon.

Figurewise the 30th has some of the best sculpts and tooling ever. However the 25th is still my favorite time for collecting considering the vast amount of product over a decent span of time.

I think the quality of GI Joe improved greatly during the PoC days, and it seems that same level of quality will remain the 'norm' for future offerings. I'm happy about that, very much so.
On the other hand, the 'vibe' that the new PoC ideas presented was unique. The 30th line has taken GI Joe back into that "reliving the old days" style, and will soon be going into movie mode. That feeling of creativity that PoC presented seems to have ended, right along with PoC itself. That is what I REALLY miss about PoC. However, I am happy, as stated above, that we are retaining the same stellar product quality that PoC also provided to us...so, It's still good to be a Joe fan, but I'm back to feeling like an adult collector again, instead of feeling like a kid :p |
