Like a lot of Tankers around here, I'm relatively new to collecting after leaving the toys of my youth behind, and while I love it, toy collecting does go against my grain. Clutter freaks me out, and also, I just don't want to become too attached to stuff, you know? So in the days following a good Christmas haul, I've been waking up and thinking, "What the f--- am I doing?" I think I finally hit that moment of overload, and I've since baggied a lot of my stuff and put it away. I don't want to stop enjoying the hobby, but the whole act of doing so is counter to my lifestyle.
My question, then, is are there other Tankers out there who feel the same way, who don't want to take on too much stuff? How do you reconcile that with an interest in Joes? Last edited by ero; 01-01-2010 at 01:46 PM.. |

While I cannot speak for others, on average I spend about 400/month on Joe's. Now recently, it has widdled down to $10/month due to lack of stock (still looking for ONE Impact Armor MOC Scarlett at reasonable price!)
I sold a bunch, traded a TON (usually the recipient got the better deal out of a lack of room and need to cleanup)...so yeah I know what you're going through. Let's hope 2010 is a smarter more frugal year. |

I know exactly how u feel man. I was a casual and occasional collector for years before the transformers classics and 25th joes hit. After that I jumped in with both feet and spent a bunch of money and had to dedicate space to it. Now that things have pretty much tapered off for the classic stuff and Hasbro has shown us that they are much less interested in appeasing adult collectors, it's easier for us to take a step back and put things in perspective a bit. It's great to have a hobby to be passionate about but there is also real life that punches us in the face every now and then. I'm in the process of trimming the fat from my collection and in the coming months, I'll be getting rid of a ton of stuff that I deem unnecessary for my collection. If collecting Joes brings you joy then you shouldn't have to give it all up but there's nothing wrong with pulling it back.

I agree. Lately I've been thinking a lot about cleaning house of some vintage stuff I bought late in my childhood and some of my other toy lines that I've collected. I think a bunch of Toy Biz Marvel Legends might go on Craigslist soon, perhaps to be followed by some vintage ARAH stuff that I don't have much emotional tie to, and then some of this Modern Era stuff might go too...
Overload is the right word. |

I've often questioned the wisdom of collecting and I always seem to justify it because I never open anything. Everything stays more or less pristine, displayed on my wall at first, then boxed away to make room for the new stuff. I also dislike clutter, but I can't stop collecting. Call it a connection to childhood, a harmless hobby, or whatever. I know how you feel, but I got no answers. Just wanted you to know you're not alone.

Being fairly new to this hobby, and collecting other stuff too (not Joe related), I feel the same way. My answer to this problem is: I only buy the stuff that I really want, I won't buy everything out there, only the stuff that really catches me. Idon't want a complete collection, it would be too expensive and take too much room. Right now everything is pretty much put away in boxes, but I'm planning on finishing my basement in a near future, an make a room just for my toys(Joes, Hotwheels and R/C stuff).

I don't like clutter either...
But I seem to make an exception when it comes to my GI JOE stuff. Legos, Star Trek, Marvel & DC super heroes end up in the attic. But GI JOE stays out. I do rotate things in & out of diplay though, including my non-JOE collections... I don't have everything on display, that would require more space than I have available right now... I'm at the point now where I need to start saving money to invest in some nice looking display cases of some sort. ultimately I want to make a room in my basement, gut I don't have the money for that right now. My Freind "Gilderdave" has some real nice ones he got from IKEA. You can see them in his collection album. Unfortunately he told me the ones he has are no longer available, but there must be something similar out there you can get that will help you get a handle on what to to with your stuff. Its hard when your collection has grown to 150+/- vehicles/playsets and 400+/- figures. I inherted a store display case from my grandfather's store that I haven't brought home yet. I admit finding a method and room to store and display your collection without looking like a pile of junk can be difficult.

When it's your collection it's not clutter, it's just not displayed. There's a difference.

I strictly collect Gi. Joe stuff, with the one exception being Deadpool and Bullseye from MU, but they're part of my Cobra Army.
I also used to only buy Cobra which helped justify all my Troop building, but then I caved and bought Charbroil & CSSE to keep MOC. Still, I have a ton of crap, 4 Steel Crushers, 6 Snake Trax, 5 of those FANG/ CLAW sets, etc. It adds up man, I feel your pain, I just can't wait to buy a house where I can display it all in the basement. |
