A couple of weeks ago, I noticed a mom and her little boy(looked about 8 or 9 years old)in the action figure section. He told his mom that he wanted GI Joe. So I wondered how he knew of GI Joe if there are no commercials advertising the toys. And really the only GI Joe cartoons are on the Hub and that channel has just recently became available without having to pay the cable company extra money to watch it. And those cartoons are 30+ years old. Then I started asking kids, in my nieghborhood, church, my kids' friends, and my friends' kids if they ever heard of GI Joe. And all of them do know of GI Joe. I asked them how. Most of them said they see them in the stores. I asked them if they ever see it on TV. Most of them don't even know the cartoon even exists. Most of them never even saw the movie. All of them have never even seen commercials or comic books. A large majority of these kids(ranging in ages of 7 to 16)collect GI Joes. They even know who to troop build and who are just single characters. They would even name their favorites so far, Snake Eyes, Zartan, Destro, Cobra Commander, Storm Shadow, Beach Head. So does GI Joe even need marketing? What causes GI Joe to stand out to the newer generations? Is it the name? Is it the characters? I try to think back to the 80's and wonder what caught my attention to GI Joe. I was too young to remember really, but something caught my attention.
Do you guys think that GI Joe REALLY needs marketing? Or do you think the name and/or the look sales itself? Last edited by sbartek1974; 11-06-2011 at 09:28 PM.. |

Cartoon on Cartoon Network or Disney. Until Hub is everywhere and parents know more about it--it is only so effective.

From your story apparently g.i.joe doesn't need advertising. Which is exactly why it should get some advertising to give it that extra push it needs to put it at a level with starwars or transformers.

And I wonder how much more the GI Joe name will be elevated if there were advertising.

G.I. Joe needs an identity before any marketing.
what exactly is G.I. Joe supposed to be if I am a kid, and why should I play with it instead of any other action figure line? we all know as far as the toys themselves, they are the best action figures on the market, but that clearly isn't enough to interest kids or else it would already be hugely popular. and we know the characters don't drive kids to the line, since the same characters have been available for years and the line hasn't drawn in a market. what is the story you are telling kids that they can't get from other toylines? am I supposed to be interested in it for the faint military aspect? the science fiction aspect? what? unfortunately, it doesn't appear Hasbro knows at this point, so marketing isn't going to help if it doesn't communicate what exactly kids should be excited about. |
