I was at the SDCC with my brother this year. On Friday, his friend's name was drawn as a winner for the Be Your Own Joe contest. At the time he was swimming in the ocean while my brother was on the shore watching their stuff. When the call came in my brother signaled him to swim in and they sped back to the convention center. His buddy ran inside still dripping wet and made it to the Wizard booth with two minutes to spare (you had one hour to get to the booth after they called you). After confirming his identity he was escorted by five costumed Joe figures across the street to a hotel. I am not sure if they were from Hasbro or Wizard or just some dressed up fans they got to come along. But once inside the hotel they had a room set-up for the photo shoot with all of the scanning equipment. I have attached a few photos, but there are more on the way.

One thing of interest is that when talking to the Hasbro reps and techs they told him that this contest was a test run. They are working on plans to make this possible on a wider scale. The plan is to eventually have a mail away figure that allows everyone to be their own G.I.Joe. They are still working out the kinks of course but the idea is to have people just send in a 2-D picture of their face from the front and then use a computer program to fill in the rest of the skull. That way everyone can have their very own figure that looks like them, more or less. They are also planning on doing this with Jedi knights for the Star Wars toy line. There was no date given for when this personalized mail away figure would become a reality on a large scale, if ever.

They had him make various faces (stoic, angry, etc.) so I am not sure which one they will end up using. He has 8 different bodies that he can pick from: Flint, Baroness, Scarlett, Destro, Duke, Roadblock, Cobra Commander, and Shipwreck. Last I heard he was debating between Duke and Shipwreck. They are going to contact him later to get that information, his file card info and quote etc. So I imagine it means the figure will come on a full card back with bubble. Plus the samples they had at the Con were in full packaging. They said he would get it in 8-10 weeks. The two “suits” who were there were a bit standoffish, but he said all the other people working the equipment and stuff were really friendly.

There was some minor talk of him potentially getting more then one figure of himself. If so, I have already let him know that I want to take it off his hands. At the very least I will be sure to have him send me plenty of pictures once he gets the completed figure. I’ll update this thread as I get more news/photos from him. As a side note, please don’t post these photos on another website. I only got his permission to post them here (hence the HISSTANK tag). Thanks.

I am of course excited/jealous for his good luck, but I am looking forward to Hasbro doing this for everyone. I think it is a brilliant idea and I really hope it works out. I don’t know what I would pay to have a toy that actually looks like me, but it would be way up there. If you could send away multiple times and they had Cobra body molds as well, who wouldn’t want an army of personalized Crimson Guards? But of the 8 choices given, I would personally go with Destro…
