After reading the madness over the SDCC Cobra Commander this morning (and being a part of it) I began to wonder what was it that started the GI Joe craze. How did I get interested in these toys and make me obsessive over collecting. So I thought it would be interesting to see how others got started.
For me, I received the Machine Gun Defense for my sixth birthday from a friend, but then didn't have any figures to go with it. My parents took me to Murphy's Mart (the local department store) to find the character on the box (Rock & Roll). They didn't have him, so I chose Short-Fuse (swivel-arm) for first ever figure. Later on, we found Rock & Roll, and then my first vehicle was the Slugger. That's what started what is now my 1100+ figure army. How did your collections begin? |

For me it was a Lady Jaye and Shipwreck at a Hecks store because there were no other Barbies or MLP(yeah, I'm a girl) that I wanted and talked my grandmother into the Joes.

I got the RAM Motorcycle in 1983 and decided that my Star Wars figures neeed something cool to go into battle with. But when the legs and arms didn't work with it, I ended up buying a Straight Arm Flash and that worked better, from there on... it's been 100's to 1000's of dollars to the GI JOE fund. If I only kept everything I had back in the day... I could make a fortune on Ebay!!

The good ol' days when a lot of stores had a lot of product to choose from. I can still see the images in my mind of the '85 figures lining the pegs. If only stores stocked them like that now. We didn't have a TRU, Walmart, or Meijer's near me back then, so there were a lot of more local stores and they had no problem getting things.

I was getting tired of other toys I had so I got some Joes including the Rolling Thunder to go up against my Transformers, etc.

For me? I had an older brother who wouldn't let me play with his toys. So with my first allowance ever I bought "Sneak Peak" and "Fast Draw" at White Mart in my home town. so it began... That collection soon absorbed my older brothers 82-86 stuff... by 2004 I had almost 500 figs then in Jan '05 I moved back home for temporarily between apartments and my bi-polar Mom snapped for totally non-joe related problems and burned our house (and my entire collection with it) down in an act of arson.
flash forward to Christmas 2007 I hadn't bought a Joe since i lost 'em all in the fire and I received the Joe 5-pack from my 14 yr old Sister In-Law.... and then it began again... in may another good friend of mine donated me a portion of his 1400 collection (about 40 complete 82 - 94 RAH Joes) and now we're back on track! And I'm happy to say this morning at 11am I started the next generation on this as I bought my 11 month old daughter (who likes to sneak into my office and dig through my Joe Drawer) the Sand Diego Con exclusive Snake-Eyes and Timber Combat Hero set.... and so it begins... again!

Original Action Force - as produced by Palitoy - No swivel arms, no O ring, and they all had Action Mans face...
Started off as Militarily accurate figures; S.A.S being a particular favourite! Then they linked to the Battle Action comic, which was jolly good! I think my first figure was the S.A.S. Frogman. Of course in 85' came the European friendly Joes under the banner of Action Force... my first purchase Zartan and Swamp Skier.

I got the Vamp with Clutch for my 5th birthday. Plus the cartoon totally kicked Looney Toons ass.

I got my first "E I Os" when I was two years old. My older brother had a few of the straight arms, and my parents bought me a couple - Rock N Roll and Zap to keep me out of his. From then on, it was the only thing I played with up thru the early 90's stuff, but I started losing interest at that point. I got nostalgic in the late 90's as I graduated from High School, wanting to hold on to childhood, I bought alot of the Toys R Us figures (I am pretty sure because I remember how funny it looked, I have a 97 PDD in storage!). Went off to college, my future wife bought me a few of the Joe vs. Cobras and then I got completely out of it over the past 5 years. Enter the birth of my twins (one boy, one girl) and I got excited over the 25th line and amassing a collection for them to play with one of these days.
Today, I too purchased two extra combat heroes for the twins. Between the combat heroes and the Might Muggs, they'll know GI Joe by the time they are ready to play with my ARAH collection and their 25th / Modern Era collection. Last edited by WVMojo; 07-28-2008 at 04:46 PM.. |
