I was wondering, what aspects of the GI Joe toyline turn them into must buys for you? Is it because it's a classic character or maybe it's the vast array of accessories. Could it be some gimmick feature?
Also if there is an aspect of another toyline you would like to see done in the GI Joe line, list it too. If possible add a picture to fully illustrate what you like or would like to see. Multiple Accessories The main reason I bought Snow Job was because of all the gear he came with. Look at him, he looks like he comes with an entire diorama's worth of items. If every figure came with a lot of accessories that pertained to the character (IE: not just a plethora of guns) I'd be hard pressed to not buy the figure. Ability to hold all accessories at once Now the secondary reason I bought Snow Job, he can carry all of that gear at the same time. I understand the idea of giving people options of which accessories/weapons your figure will use, but I typically want the figure to be able to hold all of it's accessories and only come with around 2 weapons. (There are a few figures that are exceptions to this rule/wish) Alternate Parts/Heads Including an alternate head was a stroke of genius! The alternate head was the main reason I bought Dusty. Had he only come with the unmasked head, I may have drug my feet on picking him up. Hasbro was able to market figures like Dusty & Snake Eyes to multiple fans who may have only wanted one version or the other. Another great selling point to some of the alternate gear is that many fans will buy multiples of a figure to create all the different versions. Pit Commander and Zartan are both figures that fall into this catagory. Now this may sound contradictory as I just said how I want the figures to hold all of their gear, but this makes it more like I can have two different figures by just buying one figure. This adds to the playability and customization of the figures themselves. Highly Sculpted Detail Let me use Snake Eyes as an example here. This figure is so highly detailed that it's as if someone invented a shrink ray then used it to make a 12" Sideshow figure only 4" tall. Points of Articulation/Range of Motion Since it's inception, GI Joe has been a leader when it came to articulation, even if it wasn't always the most articulated (Microman did have it beat in the late 70's) Nowdays there is a 3.75" articulation standard and it's called GI Joe. Most figures have 12 points of articulation that can move on two axis (IE: They can rotate and go up & down) add in the double jointed knees and these figures can imitate lifelike poses better than most any other 3.75" figure. Vehicle Accessories for Figures The 25th Stinger and both of the 25th & POC Vamps include figure accessories (Shovels, Guns & Hammers) that in the past were just a molded detail. The fact that they cn be removed & used by the figures is a huge bonus that makes those vehicles just a little bit better. Now for something I've seen in another toyline, I'd like to see tackled by the GI Joe design team... Collect A Playset Figure Parts Jakks Pacific & Mattel have both released 3.75" figures that included a part to build a small playset. The biggest problem with doing something like this is that without all of the figures, you don't get the full playset. Jakks seemed to try to reduce this by using simple playsets with repeating parts. (I believe you could create a wrestling ring floor if you bought 4 of the same guy, but you still needed that one guy who had the ropes) My idea is what if you created a "Playset" made out of parts the figure (or vehicle) can use by themselves? Much like the "Battlefield Accessory" sets from the 80's you could have a wave of 6 figures come with a part or two like targets or barricades and make it so that they could use those parts with the one figure or if you only bought (or could only find) half a wave you could still build the full "playset" Here's a few examples using those old 80's Battlefield Accessory Sets: Cobra Rifle Range: 2 figures come with a gun rack & sign each 2 figures come with a target each 2 figures come with a barricade each Since most all figures come with rifles, you don't need to include any extras and even if you only got one of those figures the accessory it comes with could easily be used with the figure. Machine Gun Defense Unit: 2 figures come with a Machine Gun each 2 figures come with a Sign each 2 figures come with a 2 part Tank Barricade each You could also pull off the Ammo Dump playset using vehicles. An aircraft could come with some extra missiles and a land vehicle (preferably a truck type) could come with the crate, gas can & small ammo box. Again , you could still use the playset parts even without having the full playset. |

I would like more vehicles in the 20 to 50 dollar range--keeping them reality based would be great ---the MIG-29 from Chap Mei as an example. Decent sized vehicles of this nature and the msrp on the skystriker was amazing and show that it can be done.
Vehicle playsets like a oil rig-like operations platform or Missile Launch command center would be welcomed. Something that would allow interaction with the vehicles and Joe figures would be cool as hell. |

Wow Shogi, nice OP. I can tell a lot of work went into that.
I like my figure to be updates of the vintage stuff because I am mostly into O-ring ARAH. I can't wait until I see some of the 30th updates.

One decent playset per year would be nice. Not huge but one the fits the major theme of the year.

Damn, Shogi. I've been writing you a lengthly reply to your questions in regards to starting this thread but you've pretty much covered everything and more. Now I gotta transcribe what I was going to message you with into an answer for this thread. Bravo, Shogi. Top shelf thread.

Action figures
1. Sculpt: This usually attracts me first. I appreciate great detail and proportion. I prefer "meatier" limbs as opposed to caricature. POC offered perfection in this regard. The upcoming figures (renegades, etc) also seem to follow suit. 2. Articulation: This is as equally important as long as it's not achieved through aesthetic sacrifice. 3. Accessories: Yes! accessories are definite bonus. It would be great if the figures could have unique weapons as they had with ARAH. I will say that the figure is more of a sell than the accessories most times for me. In other words, A generic figure like the Pit Commando with all his gear is cool, and I would buy only for the accessories, but I'd be more reluctant. Why go through the trouble, if Hasbro knows the accessories are the selling point for a particular figure, just start selling accessory packs like back in the day. 4. Functionality: It is equally important if all of these elements work together. I hate it when we get eye candy proto shots and when the product finally gets in hand, we're left with shit-pointless. Vehicles: 1. Sculpt and design: As with the figures, I'm looking for something that will look killer. 2. Accessories and functionality: as mentioned above for the figures, I'm looking for the same train of though to be applied with the equipment. 3. Size: I don't care about size (too big). I'd rather have something closer to scale. I hate little vehicles to try and be passed off for something potentially epic like the XH-1 Dragonhawk-what a joke! NOW classic or modern style releases? Gimme both! |

Vehicles (cont'd):
What worked and still does is keeping the in-date realism thinking into their stuff. Keep the sci-fi dialed down to about 35%. |

Shogi, I think you hit a LOT of what I really love about Joe right now.
But to reiterate with my views: Multiple Accessories I think is the biggest one. Even if Hasbro gave us figures equivalent to the old o-ring figures with the reduced articulation, I think I would still adore the figures if they were still including the volume and KINDS of accessories we're seeing in PoC/30th. With playsets of any sort (and large vehicles for that matter) pretty much dead at retail, I think including things like camping gear, scopes, wire/sandbags, and other "non combat gear" helps significantly in the creation of new scenarios for the figures. I think the biggest thing I would like to see Joe do is to tackle again are the "Entertainment Packs" that I've seen Transformers (and to a lesser extent, Star Wars) do. And I'm not talking "comic packs". Sadly, comic packs really don't seem to be much of a driver of sales in most lines. The DVD packs were, IMO, a GOOD THING. Despite collector bitching about distribution (and I'll readily argue the packs WERE plagued by iffy figure selection), I actually think those went a good way towards fueling desire for the on-shelf product. With the show on a still-limited channel, some kind of DVD pack should have been a no-brainer to help push Renegades (or hell, dip into that last library. Sigma Six, for all the hate, wasn't a bad little action cartoon and current figures actually resemble the Sigma suits quite a bit)

I like, and am happy with, the current figure designs. I've enjoyed the POC figures that have come out, and look forward to the stuff I've seen from the 2011 con. I do like the accessories that the figures have been coming with, but I prefer a figure that can actually carry everything he comes with. I would like to
See vehicles or playsets that actually hold more than 4 figures. |
