25yrs ago i started getting, and playing with, Joe figs...22yrs ago, i stopped getting and playing with Joe figs. as do most kids, my interest shifted elsewhere. as a result there are many joe characters i only know, and barely at that, by name.
a month ago i started getting, and displaying 25th anniv. Joe figs...my, my...how ive grown! here is my question that i pose to all you 25th Joe buyers & lovers... if this new line goes on for a few years, which i seems i certainly could... do you want ONLY modern remakes of characters that existed only during the first run of Real American Hero....... ...or... do you want Hasbro to CREATE entirely new characters that would fit in the modern 25th style ...and... if you are an option one....are you more apt to only get new figs of characters you had as a kid the first time around...or all? ??????????????????????????????????????????????? me personally, i just want the first option...and i am apt to get MOSTLY characters i had 25yrs ago...however, i do see some 25th i didnt have , but i wanted as a kid, (beachhead & serpentor) that i WILL get this time around! i will consider figs of characters that i really dont know as long as i think theyre "cool". Gung.Heaux, my circumstances are very simialr to yours. I stopped getting Joes when I was 12 or 13 ('85 or '86). Then (as it so often goes) my parents got rid of everything (at my blessing) except a Skystriker and Rattler. I only have the Rattler left. (I do still have the comics.) I saw the 25th figures at a Wal-Mart in August and was compelled to purchase them.
Anyway, my preference is to see the early line figures, and I would be delighted to see all of the first Joes. I'll still get others that were introduced in later years, but maybe only to a point (I'm less interested in monsters). If they make new characters, I don't know what I'll end up doing. |

There are so many existing characters, I can't quite see them coming up with new ones. There were characters that never saw production, like Pythona from the movie.

I collected GI Joe right up until age 12, which was 1990, and I had (and still have, in my parent's closet, quite a collection). Personally I wouldn't mind seeing some of the later, but still reasonable figures- Bullhorn, Ambush, Freefall, Sky Patrol to name 3 of my late (in my collecting years) favorites- get the 25th Annie treatment...but I recognize that there's a whole lot more to get to before doing those guys.
Mostly I'd like to see fewer repaints. Gimme a Jinx instead of a Red Ninja and more Dreadnoks instead of a second Destro (though I'll be all over the IG Gold-head Destro, if that's who the 'blade Destro' is). |

Good topic Gung.Heaux. I personally will only collect characters between the 82-91 years. To me the line just got to kiddy to me after those years(this coming from a grown man playing with toys...the irony!!) Brightly colored figures, and weapons that shot out water never really appealed to me back then as a kid. So I lost interest in joes. But to see the orginal characters brings back a nostalgic feeling for me to see Snake-eyes, Cobra Commander and Duke the way I remember them with the addition of more articulate joints and removeable weapons of course!

I really plan on only buying modern remakes of characters that were made between 1982-1988. And I might pick and choose certain characters that I liked originally beyond those years until the line ended in 1994. And if Hasbro decided to start making figures based on characters that appared in the old cartoon and Marvel comic book (Sparks, Dr. Venom etc.) which never had a toy back then, I would get them too. And I don't plan on buying figures with "updated looks" such as wave 2 Serpentor and wave 3 Zartan. I prefer the original designs.

As for me I think I plan to get characters from the TV show and the movie for those few that only made the movie and not the show. Characters that weren't in the RAH TV show or movie are less desired the those that were. That's what I mostly want, as for if the line continues further I'm not sure at this point, but I probably will continue to buy them anyway.

I was more of a comic guy than a cartoon guy growing up and such I would prefer recognizable characters that I had and also ones that were in the four-colored pages. I collected till the end in '94 (when I was 14) - but between 92-94 I only bought a handful of the characters and vehicles. If they got up till 88 or 89 I'd be happy (albeit I'd like a SAW viper, v4 Snake Eyes, Siegie Immortal, Metal-Head, Night Creeper and a few others).
I also agree on the repaints, except I loved the Red Ninjas - as I said before I was a big comic guy and would love to have 4-5 of them for Snake Eyes decimate. Hell, I guess what I'm REALLY trying to say is I'll collect anything that comes out.. with GI Joe and 25th as long as the put the neon paints down. |
