This is a message to Hasbro. Feel free to copy it and send it to them.
Dear Hasbro, We want our Joes! We are tired of going into Walmart, Target and Toys R Us to find empty pegs and shelves. Why can I find wave after wave of Star Wars and Indiana Jones, yet can't find my GI Joes? I walk into a Walmart to find two endcaps of Walmart exclusive Star Wars figures (Droid Factories and Comic Packs) yet I still can not find a GI Joe on the pegs. I also can not find Cobra Troop figures. Collectors seem to buy these in bulk. Thus, some collectors who only want 1 must live without or resort to scalpers on eBay (also known as Scalper's Emporium). Thus, I suggest a few minor things based on a few minor observations. #1. Fix the distribution and production numbers. There's no reason these shouldn't be in stores. #2. Increase case assortments of basic troop builder figures. #3. GI Joe Dept. walk over to the Star Wars Dept. and ask how they work with both kids and adult collectors. Its been almost 15 years of Star Wars and somehow it keeps going. #4. Utilize HasbroToyShop. There's no reason that a Hasbro owned toy store should not have their products in stock. Use pre-orders to dictate production numbers. Don't guess. Make what is demanded. #5. Create Trooper builder packs for Cobra like Star Wars did for Stormtroopers and Biker Scouts. These packs were plain white boxes and required little package effort and cost. I would love to be able to buy a 5-pk of Vipers or BATs for $25-$30 and not have to hunt these down carded. #6. If Hasbro is marketing so hard to pull back adult GI Joe fans and collectors, why not recruit a few collectors to give you the word on the street. Its hard to see how things really work when execs rarely get out of the office. #7. Research the demand of Movie figures before you produce a gadjillion of them and see them warming pegs for months to come. Sometimes, collectors don't care for movie-ized versions. They want what they remember. They like the original interpretations. Examples are: Indiana Jones, Speed Racer, and Hulk toys that clogged inventories and don't move. #8. If I can get a comic pack for $10, why can't I get one carded figure for $5. The comic pack is an AWESOME concept. If I were Hasbro I would increase production and selection. Not only do you get 2 figures, you get a Comic Book, too! In a slipping economy and changing marketplace, Hasbro should do its homework. The most powerful marketing tool is your customer. Reach out and work with them. If a customer can not find what he seeks, he eventually leaves. Creating false demand by creating supply issues will only hurt the long term viability of your product. Yours truly, GI Joe Collector and Fan |

Agree with all of this except many collectors don't care for the comic packs and would rather have them single-carded. The only thing about troop-builder packs, too, is that Hasbro will change the color scheme. The Crimson Guards five-pack, for example, has a somewhat different color variation. So did the Senior Ranking Officer pack, the Cobra five-pack, the Legions pack, and so on.

I guess when I think of Collectors I forget that theres two forms of collector. Theres the open and enjoy collector. And the one that likes everything carded and never opens them. I used to be that second example but found I was missing out on the joy of playing with my figures (like when I was a kid). And the trooper builder packs that Hasbra did for Star Wars did not change the paint schemes. It was just a mass packaging effort of the trooper builder figures. The Legion and Officer packs are direct collector driven repaints. I'm using the trooper builder white-boxed format that was used for Star Wars in the past. |

I have a couple of issues with this, first off, for the love of god No more Troopers! I can find them really easily as they have been peg warming a bit around here. On that note I'd love some army builder packs with no changes to the figures (I completely passed the night watch troops set because I want blueshirts) but this idea can backfire too. I currently have a store near me with 12 Vipers! 12 of them! That's a small army right there.
Now for the Star Wars department....you guys DON'T like repaints right? Because there's a whole line or two of Star Wars figures that are nothing but repaints and re-releases from a year or two ago. Look at the Saga Collection from 2006, it's mostly all the Episode III figures with some new figures thrown in here and there. Same can be said for the 30th Anniversary but there were a few newer toys in there along with a bunch that were previously released years ago (Dark Trooper from the 90's anyone?) How would you like to see a new line of GI Joe figures (Let's call it "GI Joe The Ultimate Collection") That coinsists of all the figures you've gotten thus far in the 25th (All those Buzzers, Snake-Eyes and Cobra Commanders all over again) plus say 2-3 new characters that only show up in one wave each? Movie figures, you have a good point here, but I wouldn't lump Indy in there. I believe the problem with the Indy figures is that they just made too many of them for the amount of Indy collectors out there, not because Indy fans don't like movie versions of them. I know the first week or two that those things hit stores, they were selling out all over the place. I had to hit 5 stores just to find one figure I was looking for (Cemetary Warrior) |
