So for 2 months I have been waiting and waiting for the last two waves of Pursuit of Cobra to hit the shelves in any one of the 4 Super and 1 regular Walmarts, 2 Super and regular Targets, a K-Mart, and Toys R Us within some 15-20 miles of me, and with the exception of nailing Rock Viper, Iron Grenadier, Viper, Croc Master, and Crazy Legs, (I really only wanted the last 2 but what the hell), I havent seen crap but the usual couple peg warmers and mech suits. I am just blown away how badly GI Joe seems to inspire the big retailers. And in my trips I breeze through other stuff like Star Wars, etc, and have realized that I havent really seen a lot of stuff moving. I mean, there are still 15 different versions of Iron Man on the shelves, I dont think anyone has sold a single movie Thor figure, and now we're loaded up with Green Lantern and Captain America. And they all seem to have something similar in common:

The lack of villans.

Now in the case of movies, you really just get a bunch of variations of the hero and maybe a single bad guy or two. Does anyone really need 5 versions of the Green Lantern? How many different Iron Mans are they going to make? Who are kids expected to battle with in the backyard? I think the reason Star Wars has been king for so many years is the variety on both sides.

Anyway, I just think as an industry manufacturers are kind of blowing it.

But for Hasbro, they have really blown it with GI Joe.

When Renegades came out, I mentioned here how I was surprised there were no toys, and peeps seemed to think that was ok. I think by the time we see any Renegades figures, the series will no longer be of any interest to kids and therefore the figures will only sell to us collectors. With all their effort in making a sequel to a really bad movie, they have pulled their resources out of two of the best things Hasbro had going for GI Joe - Pursuit of Cobra and Renegades. Say what you want about Renegades but it is a brilliant re-boot, and could have gone on for 100 episodes. But its ending and I doubt will be picked back up after the movie sequel comes out.

30 for 30 or whatever it is now. Think kids are going to care about that? No, we're the target audience and that means low sales and that means more recycled parts and vehicles (Hey can I get the Armored Panther in another color please? Oh how about the Hang-Glider with the mini gun and missles?). Anyway, while I thought the sculpts of Air Tight and Lifeline were brilliant, kids have no idea who the heck these guys are, and without any kind of media to support them, they might as well be The Corps, who seem to have twice the peg space as GI Joe has these days. How is Hasbro going to be able to justify expanding the series? And the Skystriker? Hey that was cool in 1984 when the F-14 was a bad ass intercepter, but its a retired relic now and I can't imagine kids being interested in it.

I really think Hasbro is all over the place, and that is really hurting the brand. It seems like they have a short attention span. And to me that means low sales and a further lack of interest in Walmart and Co setting aside any real shelf space.

This blows.

Hasbro is actually listening to collectors, and aiming the products towards adults now, and you are upset?!?!

How many rip-it attack cycles did you buy? How many combat heroes? This is the stuff we have been asking for, and now we are getting it.

You may want to run before your logic causes a backlash.

I will agree with one thing in this post, and that is a lack of product at retail. This Sunday I decided was official Joe Hunting Day for Llama and Son. We hit 11 Wal Marts, 10 Targets 3 Toys R Us, 4 WallGreens, 6 Rite Aids, 2 Big Lots and a local comic book store.

Between all of those we found 0 PoC after wave 2. I would say in total we found:

Arctic Destro (maybe 60 or so of them)
Dusty
Stupid ass action Snake Eyes
Jungle Viper
1 Alley Viper (at Wallgreens for 12.99)
1 Wave 3 Duke (which I purchased)
Wave 1 Snake eyes

And that's it for single carded figues. Fuck, I have doubles of all of them (except the Duke, which I purchased) so I didn't buy anything else.

It's not a fact that they are listening to us collectors that he's talking about really. It's the pure lack of merchandise and the ability to find it. I do somewhat agree with the skystriker statement. It's cool for us old collectors but Im not sure I see kids buying them. I'm just waiting for the brand to advance which I thought I saw happening with renegades but no such luck . Now it appears everything hinges on the movie which so far is looking better than the first with the casting.
