We as collectors hear to word "Variant" and we are programmed to think more money. This is the first time I can remember Hasbro actively advertising a "Variant" in the general release of the Joe line. This advertising would lead me to believe there will be some wider availability. I know when these first hit stores/online the paranoia of never seeing one will hit and they probably will go for over $20.00 or higher on the secondary markets. I do not believe these are going to be scarce like Sgt Slaughter, Dialtone, or upcoming Zarana. Why else would they advertise them? Now, if the brick & mortar keep up the job they're doing stocking this line... these Variants may seem rare for a while.
I really hope I'm right...What are your thoughts? |

Admittedly, the regular Blowtorch and Croc Master aren't exactly easy to come by in this area. And I think that it's been mentioned that Hasbro is refering to them more as "running change" than "variant". This would imply to me that once they show up, they'll be here to stay till production of the character is over.

I agree. I think it will be like Vision and Warpath from the MU line. The originals are getting about $70 on ebay and the "variants" are more like a running change and very easy to pick up and afford. The first few of the "variants" listed went for big $ on the secondary market.

I was thinking that they also advertised the clear Wraith as a variant, but I could be wrong. Anyhow, waves 5 & 6 are scarce around my parts -- neither have been spotted at retail in my area as of yesterday. So the variants will obviously be rare as well. But I hope you are right. I saw 3 or 4 clear Wraiths at retail.

I never saw a clear Wraith at retail during the 25th... but since they hit TJ Maxx I've probably seen at least 10 of them.
I could easily see the regular versions of Blowtorch and Croc Master becoming the rare versions in the future... I can't see them being worth much but I could see them becoming somewhat rare. I just don't think there is that much interest in the first PoC release of the two figures to make them valuable or drive the price up on these. |

Isn't variant the oldest trick in the marketing book?

its funny how much more i want the croc master with a simple paint change, that red is cool. im hoping these will be easy to come by as i wouldnt fork out much to get them. are these suppose to come out in a specific wave or should they just show up as part of wave 5 and 6? havnt heard anything about how they are distributing them or a release date.

You mean like trying to sell jet pack Duke as a variant of screaming jet pack Duke from the multipack... Yeah, we bitch about "repaints" and then spend a case's worth of money on a "variant".
But don't let on like you know or Hasbro will send in a strike team to kill your in you sleep. You'll be replaced by a yes-man. Like their own little CG Army. |
