Data Viper is closer to a Tele-Viper than a Techno-Viper. In fact, the Data-Viper would probably have been an "upgraded/specialized" version of a Tele-Viper (Like a Hydro-Viper or Lamprey is to an EEL). As for what it has in common with the Jungle Viper: It's a Cobra Trooper that isn't a carbon-copy of one that's come before and it's not selling all that well. If you go further back, the Para-Viper didn't exactly fly off shelves either and that was one of the best Cobra troops in years. Basically, it seems like Joe fans don't really want anything new even if they say they do. |

I don't think it has anything/much with being a new figure compared to what the figure was.
Jungle Viper just didn't end up being a good troop builder. Great in concept but the execution wasn't that great. The JV didn't end up being very functional and playable. Data-Viper was probably going to suffer the same problems. Great looking figure in concept but it might not have been a big troop builder, not very functional or playable. The UAVs would have rocked though.

The thing is, I buy figures for two reasons. One, because they are cool looking, or two, because they have some sentimental value to me.
For me to troop build something, it has to meet both those criteria. Jungle Vipers were really cool looking, and I bought a couple, but I was never going to buy 50+ like I do with Blueshirts or Vipers. |

Arctic Destro is the only pegwarmer. Even the Jungle Viper found a crowd eventually. (Note: Yellow Croc Master is destined to be the next Arctic Destro, but we all knew that before he even came out.) Data Viper would have sold.

I don't think it would have made much of a difference. As with every other toy ever released, people that like it would buy it & people that didn't like it would pass on it. But instead everybody that liked it is just plain screwed now. |

ROC Storm Shadow is STILL pegwarming at all the Walmarts I go to. The new Duke is peg warming at my Walmart. Arctic Destro is pegwarming like crazy across the entire country. Looks like Hawk from the latest wave is next. Would 1 Data Viper really have made that much of a difference? If they released this figure would it really have doomed the entire franchise?

J-V was very cool looking. But as a functional trooper? It didn't work. I got one and that was all I wanted/needed and I don't even include it in my Cobra Army because it doesn't fit. Guns too big, doesn't work for a jungle sniper. The imager/goggles are too big, not functional. The ghillie suit looks great, but not that functional/playable. Great looking figure. Works better as a statue. D-V, I think, was going to suffer the same fate as J-V.

J-V barely made it to retail because there was an issue with packaging him and making him fit in the shell. D-V could have had the same issue.
