I think they get whatever there is a surplus of and then make the sets. Now the SNAKE armor this year was a mold that someone did so I think it was whatever color plastic they used. From my understanding, that was actually supposed to be in the set too. Again, I'm not 100% sure on that info but that was relayed to me down the grape vine.
The Firebat had to have been painted. At the show a couple of us were checking out our firebats and noticed on the exhaust port on the top of the bat that paint had flaked off that had filled in the cracks between the exhaust holes. Whatever they used was really solid paint. |

If they are really using RIT dye to make these, I can tell you from experience that some parts will fade over time. I've had 25th figures I've dyed, lose the dye over time in the soft plastic. RIT dye is great because it won't affect silver painted parts, leaving them intact. But it reacts differently with different plastics. I'm not sure what process they use, but it's something I'd watch.

Great review! I like my set and had a blast at the con. The comic is a great read and worth picking up.
You can read about the making of the set (focus on the Hailstorm Pilot) in the JoeCanuck August 2010 Newsletter. Quote:
The set is looking real good so far! I'm guessing that the Firebat and Jet Pack might be part of it too.
All three figures are made up mostly from Jet Pack Duke, AVAC, and Para-Viper. So if you can't make it to Canada Joe Con (or get a set if attending), you could customize your own versions. Snake-Byte Head, Lower Arms, Legs, Pistol? - Jet Pack Duke Upper Torso and Upper Arms - AVAC Hands - Para-Viper Ice Guard Hands, Bandolier and Flag - Jet Pack DukeHead - Tri-Gate Creations/Slayer Design Studio Torso and Arms - Para Viper Legs - AVAC Skirt - Serpentor Hazard Head/Helmet and Lower Arms - AVAC Head, Legs, Webgear - Para-Viper Torso and Upper Arms - Jet Pack Duke |

So the figures were painted too? That's what it sounded like from that article. If so that's awesome and makes the set worth it to me. If they put that time into a set I can really appreciate that.
