History:
The 2009 JoeCon gave us many exciting sneak peaks at the then planned 2010 POC spring-line. A continuation of ROC (at the time) many high quality gear-riddled figures where shown with much anticipation to be held by fandom. As months moved on POC changed in format a bit, as it appeared that Retailers may not have been on board with a continuation of a Joe toyline based in the ROC universe... probably due to slower than expected sales of the ROC Movie merch. Hasbro did a reboot & had to reformat the figures a bit, as well as push the release date back until fall of 2010 (most likely due to lack of retailer support not wanting more ROC glut, but still wanting to carry GI Joe product overall). Various Q & A's w/Hasbro + Toy Fair 2010 gave fans their answers, after months of a dry spell of no official newly seen product. Hasbro announced their new POC plans to be less Movie themed & more GI Joe universe 2010 with modern aesthetics. They were dropping movie actor-likenesses (most likely due to cost & the move forward) on the upcoming POC figures & instead were going for more tried & true character representations that have become the staple of core characters trademark looks. In the process many planned POC figures have been reformatted or lost from the lineups. One of those casualties is Arctic Threat Duke. Planned early in the original POC line for a tentative spring date, AT Duke showed up in Asian auctions for months, although sans some gear (the coat) he now seems destined for to be scrapped or retooled with a non-movie likeness head or perhaps becoming a new character altogether. Fact is the tooling is made, & although Hasbro may trash this unique head, the body can be easily be reused down the line. But since some of the original AT Duke's construct did make it out online, I thought I better snatch one up before the opportunity to own this version of this figure was lost altogether. Review: AT Duke is a solid figure. A very good Channing Tatum likeness is there in the head, now with a snow cap on, & he comes with a bevy of accessories & new tooling. Duke has a new head, new arms (with medium range of motion at the elbows), all new legs (WITH BALL-JOINTED KNEES!!) & feet. The KNEES come in handy when doing extreme poses on his board lol. But seriously, this is something very common in Hasbro's modern Star Wars line but has not been implemented as a standard in Modern G.I.*Joe, making Duke a bit unique. The color scheme is mostly black & white with tan camo & washing over the exposed black parts to look worn. The figure comes with a newly tooled TAR-21 (now with cold weather wraps), a bazooka (that originally came with ME GI Joe Bazooka) a new back pack with removable frame (which fits in both ways depending how you want to display his gear), & the most impressive of the bunch, a "ROC emblemed" snow board with spring action wings for some fast paced action in the arctic. You can actually store the snow board & bazooka on Duke's backpack, & although it makes him a bit top heavy, it's an insane feature that makes him look fully-loaded when all geared up. On the downside, he does not handle his assault rifle to well as the sleeves on his arms hinder him from holding it properly, but the strapped bazooka is no problem in hand. He also fits on the board fairly well & I will take this spring-action winged board over a spring-action rocket launcher any day, as I think kids would have a lot of fun with him going into hyper-mode on this board during play. There is a button on the black pack on the board that unleashes the wings. Now this figure was shown at JoeCon '09 featuring a heavy jacket, but very few leaked samples from China actually had the jacket via auction as this figure seems to be the most rare (in any form) of the initial ebay POC early-released singles. The jacket definitely beefs him up nicely in the photos but it is not a deal breaker, as it's easy enough to take some webgear (like a Pit Commando vest) & slap it on Duke to make him look more rugged over the impact armor. He definitely needs a little something to bulk up the chest for aesthetic reasons, & the coat he did come with is no where to be found on upcoming POC or Chinese sellers' auctions, so if you want this figure with more covering, you may have to wait or customize him with some gear if he looks a bit to under dressed for you. It's worth noting that even though this figure does not have the jacket, it is a final version, as he has no marring or writings anywhere on him that is common on test-shots. All in all, Arctic Threat Duke is a great fully-loaded figure for ROC/POC fans or just fans of Arctic themed 4-inch figures. For now, it looks like this figure has been canned for release (at least with this Channing Tatum head), so if you are hoping to add him looking like this to your collection, you may want to consider it now, before it's no longer an option... ~SB |

Spot-on review! I agree with you on all counts... This is the rarest of the pre-production POC figures... Good thing I snatched one up off ebay for just $11... Now it's selling for $20-$30...

Good review, and great job acquiring those unproduced figures! I don't know what to think about this figure, personally. This seems less like "Arctic Duke" and more like "Channing Tatum on vacation." Seriously, what's with the giant Joe shield logo on the board? Is G.I.Joe all about product placement all of a sudden? That's almost as bad as Cobra! I half expected to see a Coca-Cola logo on the bottom of the board.
And seriously, what's with Hasbro and 'arctic' camo? Duke here would blend in great surrounded by piss stains in the snow, but other than that, what the hell is he hoping to blend in with? That aside, it seems like he went out of his way to procure as much black gear as he could get his hands on. Since when is plain white NOT the best color to wear to blend in with snow? What the hell is that Snow Serpent hoping to blend in with? You know what color snow is? White! What color is it at night? White! It's still white! White camo blends in with white snow! Uhhhggg!! |

That damn jacket... If it wasn't a two piece part most of us that have that figure may have had one complete. LOL
I still want one of those unreleased quarrel figures.. can't find one anywhere.
