In the movie, the Mantis sub is utilized to defend M.A.R.S. Industries’ facilities from the G.I. Joe onslaught. In toy form, the Mantis is a re-release of the 2004 Valor vs. Venom Sting Raider (not to be confused with the 25th Anniversary Sting Raider, a re-release of the Water Moccasin). The Mantis is designed with a streamlined body with wings, a large cockpit, and two elevated turbines and tail. The sub features a working grabber claw in the front, wings that fold up and slide open to reveal two missile launchers, spinning turbine blades, and an opening cockpit.
The Mantis comes with the Aqua-Viper Officer (a bit of a mouthful), which is very close to a repaint of the Cobra Lamprey from the recent Defense of Cobra Island 7-pack. The only difference, other than color, is that the AQV has a completely removable helmet instead of just the faceplate. Like the Lamprey, the body of the AQV is the same as that of Alpine (with arms and legs first seen on Snow Job). This means the leg holster has the “AT” (Adventure Team) logo on it. Atypical for a Cobra soldier figure, there is no mask covering his face. The AQV also has a removable vest with various hoses and gauges, a backpack with two hoses that attach to the back of the helmet, and a rifle (named the M.A.R.S. Industries D57-A extreme environment tactical pulse rifle). I really like this vehicle, especially its streamlined shape and overall quality of construction. I can just picture it jetting through the water. For the most part, the included figure can fit completely in the cockpit, which is always a plus. The opening and folding wings and missile launchers are nice features. The claw that snaps shut is probably a good feature for kids, but doesn’t do much for me. Perhaps I can just pretend it’s there for collecting deep-sea scientific samples. The figure that comes with the Mantis is generally appealing with a nice color scheme. My biggest complaint is the head—it just doesn’t cry out “Cobra” to me (more like “Go-oo-oo-lly”). I’d prefer to see the typical partially or completely masked head sculpt. It is nice, though, to have the removable helmet. My other small complaint is that the torso just doesn’t work for me, visually. It looks like a tank-top, which looks odd when matched with the more bulkily covered arms. The vest covers it, though, so there’s not much to worry about. Also, the AT logo on the holster is a little annoying, but maybe I’m nitpicking. Overall, I think this is a worthwhile purchase. Vehicle rating: 9/10 Figure rating: 7/10 Nerd Alert! I find it funny that an undersea vehicle is named after a land-dwelling insect (although there is a Mantis Shrimp). Maybe Manta was what they had in mind?

But is the Aqua-Viper Officer the same as an Eel? Just wondering ... (And the answer is no. Now I know - and knowing is yada yada yada.)

I'll be picking this up.
I'm also having a hard time seeing the AVO as a Cobra officer. The unique head just doesn't scream Cobra and it just doesn't have the Named Cobra feel to it. I'm debating making the figure a Joe. There's no Cobra logos on him so could work.
