At the G.I. Joe Con in NOLA a couple years ago, one of the desiners gave some interesting tidbits on this design while it was in the display case. He stated that the figure is based off of Navy Seal technology for the artic underwater setup from what I remember. He stated that all of the gear has been tested and used in real life for under water under ice environments in extreme weather climate.
I thought that was pretty cool although they changed the idea of the character to be a Computor type character instead of an underwater diver.

Truly a great review man! Very detailed... I was wondering about the shoulder parts, couldn't decide if they were mini rockets or modems or like some kind of laser weapon like Predator

Imagine the surprise a Joe trooper would get, trying to charge the undoubtedly heavy and slow moving Data Viper, only to receive a salvo of missiles for his troubles.

Wow he really does look like that power rangers baddy.
I still think missile/rocket pods as well, they can be pretty small and light.

Guys, if they were modems they wouldn't move. And it still would be pointless. Looks a lot like Metal Gear Rex, which had similar missile pods.
Combat ninja is also Metal Gear influenced with that one-eyed head, Grey Fox (the cyber ninja) I think was his name. That blue ninja from the comics was inspired/copied from him. We had a Predator influenced wave, now a Metal Gear influenced wave. Great figure by the way, as soon as I opened it I was impressed! Probably not the originally intended body though, check inside the armor, there are grooves and thingies that don't line up exactly... Even without the gear, this figure rocks. Rocks like Daniel's photography, good job buddy!

Found and bought this guy at Rite Aid today. He's ok ... a bit of a letdown. Great accessories, but otherwise just ok. Will NOT be getting another one of him.
