Quick question for you guys,
Q: Do you think the army-building buying metality hurts other people's chances of finding any troop/infantry type figures in stores? Even if they just want 1 of every troop figure? From my experience, pretty much anything trooper-related from POC-onward has been a pain in the ass or next to impossible to find. However, most of everything else that is solely restricted to being 1 character(Duke, Cobra Commander, Destro, Dusty, etc.) is far easier to obtain.

It'd be a lot better for all of us if they'd figure out a way to pack the cases up with less individual characters and more army builders. Ah well... |

Army Building hasn't made a difference for my area since we haven't had any Joe figures stocked since December. I have been buying from people here instead and oddly the only two I haven't been able to get ahold of are one army builder (Hawk) and one named character (Jungle BAT). For some reason my sources blanked on those two, but were able to get the rest of wave 5 as well as all of waves 3,4,6 including extra Shock Troopers.

I don't owe anyone else in the public anything, and if I get to it first, it's mine. Even if someone I knew was specifically looking for a figure that I stumbled across and I didn't have money to purchase it, I would securely hide it for them and let them know where it was (and I'm not talking hidden on the bottom shelf, I'm talking like hidden inside a box of diapers or under a garden display or inside a folded bath towel somewhere on the opposite side of the store). Now, to be fair, if said individual ended up not wanting it, I would return to the store and put it back where I got it to give others the option of taking it. Hiding and leaving something there for years is a bummer for everyone. To put it bluntly, if you snooze- you lose. The early bird truly does get the worm. I get out there and hunt as much as I can and thus, I typically get everything I need. Taking big chances like passing on a fresh case of new figures because you assume that they will be plentiful later or getting picky about paint apps, package condition etc is naive, but we've all made mistakes along the way. Happy hunting! |

Technically, yes. It does hurt other people's chances of finding any troop/infantry type figures in stores, but at the same time (and as a troop builder), if I see it (and I have use for it), I buy it. 9 times out of 10, I will do 1 of 3 things with it:
1) keep it for my own army 2) sell/trade it to someone that I know is looking for it 3) scrap it for parts for my customs To leave a desirable figure on the pegs is foolish on basic principle. What about those who work crazy/long hours and can't get to the stores until after people who grab every single one of a certain figure are done with the section?
Heck, knowing that some people will not give others a chance to find certain figs is sometimes almost enough to be discouraged from going out and looking and eventually wasting gas. I really do understand your point, but it does come across as a little selfish and inconsiderate towards the collecting community. Quote:
A tip of where to find certain figs is one thing, hence this thread. Even picking up the occassional 2 at a time because you know someone who doesn't have one will pay you back because they can't be there for whatever reason is understandable; but to make it so that mainly only one or two people need to be contacted to arrange getting those figs might be seen as monopolizing or hoarding by some who don't share your views. Plus there's not always the option of scheduling a meet up or paying extra for shipping. One of the great joys of collecting is finding the object of ones desire on their very own fruition. Again, I get what you're saying; however, your wording gives the impression of a lack of respect towards others in general, which hurts the integrity of your argument, but also doesn't lighten the frustration others have had in not being able to find certain figs. Not at all trying to start anything, just trying to show another perspective. And to keep this relevant to the thread: 5 Vamps, 4 black dragons(with different stamped #s on the back, not 119 nor 165), 2 Hazard Vipers, 5 IG and a bunch of Stalkers at Worcester Walmart.

Considering that I've been able to complete POC waves 1-4, with half of wave 5, I think I've done very well so far. Now, my next paragraphs are not to be taken with any anger or hostility whatsoever, so please don't read them as such. As for being picky about paint apps, I've only become that way in the past 5 years, by hitting a bad luck streak with many of my toy purchases turning out to be defective from the factory (especially Transformers). Plus I hate having to return stuff as it means having to drive back. So that's where that comes from. So I have become accustomed to the habit of looking over an item very carefully before I decide to spend my hard earned money on it. Also, I only buy 1 of a figure I want. Not 2 or 7 or 35, just one. So that is also a reason why I try to find the nicest one for my collection. I have left behind plenty of alley vipers, shock troopers, fireflys, snow jobs, recondos, quick kicks, spirits, wave 3 snake eyes, city Destros, skydives, shadow stalkers, lowlights, and general hawks behind for others to purchase. The same applies to vehicles. Also considering how poorly the last 2 waves were distributed, I'm not upset. Many people on this board are in the same boat or worse, with some not even seeing figures past wave 2! I knew they would be hard to find, but never did I imagine they would be harder to find than wave 4. And so, a lesson learned is a lesson earned, and come next time, I'll be more focused and determined on trying to get the items I want, even if it means I'll have to buy online.

I really do understand your point, but it does come across as a little selfish and inconsiderate towards the collecting community. Is that to mean I'm a fool for say, leaving a 25th BAT on the peg at TJMaxx/Marshalls when they have 2 or 3 because I know other collectors might want one too? Am I a fool for trying to help out other collectors that I may not know/not have met yet? A tip of where to find certain figs is one thing, hence this thread. When I get tips I let people know where the figures are and they usually go and get them. This is the reason why we formed this Network...Me I rather meet up with people if their giving it to me for cost and plus you can shoot the shit about Joes with cool people. The last option is buying them online... |
