I always felt that the Compound Z Cobra Zombies were not zombies in the traditional sense as walking dead with an unquenchable hunger for the flesh of their own. Their file-cards make no mention of such qualities.
To me, the Zombie Vipers were no more than mindless corpses reanimated by Compound Z in a liquid form and the coordination programming of their helmets. No infectious bites, no hunger for human flesh. Just very controllable infantry with unique abilities and the ability to trudge on no matter what pain or damage is inflicted upon them. I gave it some thought and I think Compound Z could work this way... The liquid state Compound Z is stored in canisters which are attached to the Zombie's harness. From these canisters, the liquid is actively pumped throughout the harness, into the spinal cord and veins. It also travels through long cables and into the Zombie's helmet, which sends it directly into the Zombie's brain stem. The helmet is absolutely crucial when it comes to controlling these reanimated soldiers. It controls the coordinates the Zombie's motor and cognitive skills. Without it, they are reduced to nothing more than lumbering corpses that quickly fall down and slouch about as they emit gurgling noises. Using the helmet, the Zombies minds can operate on a tailored program or be remotely controlled by a living human operator from the safety of a Cobra base. Visuals from the Zombies to their operators/command are provided by small cameras located all over the helmet. The transfer of this compound throughout the Zombie's body brings on reanimation in a similar fashion to electrical stimlation on the nerves of dead animals but in a far more controllable manner. When in use, the Zombies bodies consume energy from the Z Compound and expel the burned off excess as waste through their pores like sweat. This explains the bright blue liquid we see dripping off their bodies and running through exposed veins. The Compound powers their limp bodies back to "life" like a fuel, and when that fuel runs out, the Zombies go into brief shock and then abruptly collapse to the ground, back into a lifeless state. Constant replacement of the canisters on a Zombie Viper's harness is critical to it's "run time." Without refueling, Zombie Vipers will cease functioning aka go "dry." Luckily, with the programming provided by their helmets, the Zombies can be controlled remotely by an operator which allows them to make sure the zombies switch out the replenish the canisters on their harnesses regularly. If the Zombies still retain fuel within their bodies but their helmets and/or their attachment cords are removed or destroyed, then they lose all coordination and thought, falling to the ground wriggling about in place. In this state, they are just as useless as "dry" Zombies. However, these Zombies must be recovered and have their equipment repaired or replaced since "dry" zombies still have the chance of being refueled by another passing Zombie giving it's own supply of extra canisters to re-power the empty Viper. *An unexpected and exciting side effect of Compound Z on the necrotized flesh of the Zombie Vipers is the deformation, extension, and manipulation of their appendages! So far only observed in their forearms, hands, and fingers, the injection of Compound Z into necrotized flesh allows it's host to dislocate their skeletal structure and stretch their muscles and skin to uncanny lengths! The Compound converts each appendage into a muscular hydrostat, enabling the muscles to operate without their inner skeletal frame, much like a human tongue or a squid's tentacle. These appendages exhibit many qualities of a hydrostat with the ability to bend, stretch, contract, twist, and stiffen. These actions all work together like a biological orchestra, forming their limbs into long grasping tendrils that can wrap around virtually any object they are presented with. Further attempts to manipulate other extremities have proven unsuccessful, but the possibility of turning these things into walking "Mr. Fantastic's" completely under Cobra's control could radically alter the use of Cobra infantry with such an unstoppable and adaptable force on the battlefield.

That is quite a dissertation on Compound Z. Much too long for a file card though. ![]() |

THis remindes me that every time i go to Cinemaworld at the Lincoln Mall, before the movie starts there is a graphic and voice over for "Cinedigm" who I think are responsible for the digital picture. Anyway Cinedigm is too close to Cyberdyne aka Skynet aka the end of mankind. So if the robot take over happens, you know where is started.
This is the internet. Every topic is open for discussion with no filter on stupidity. That is quite a dissertation on Compound Z. Much too long for a file card though. ![]() I wrote it with the intention that if it were ever used officially to explain the compound for a comic/show/fiction, it would make sense. Personally, I wrote it just to see if it could make sense, and it can if you think about how it would operate and why the Zombie Vipers have what they have for gear. Figuring out why and how their limbs could become tentacles was fun. We know from the wave 5 POC Cobra Commander that Compound Z begins as a solid(reused mass device accessory) and Cobra has to turn it into a liquid in order to use it on the Zombies. Doesn't seem like much of a "mystery" anymore. Now, the location of those two figures in my sig, that's a mystery!
