I thought the cartoon portrayal was kind of cool, though they are definitely over the top. To me they are fun if they are viewed in a stand-alone continuity to themselves rather than part of the larger Joe universe as a whole. That being said, I didn't really like Cobra Commander being a descendant.
I think the toys are fun and they occupy an out of the way space in my collection.

Cobra- La reminds me of ploy to get the Commander to take off his mask like that episode where Cobra makes a deal with an evil woman who wants young pretty girls' faces. He is a cartoon bad guy. He is suppose to be ugly. If he was good looking, he would be still ugly to the bad guys.
Cobra-La is like Commander's nightmare after he gets a hangover.

They would be awesome as stand-alone monsters that maybe Cobra "recruited" or used in a Sunbow-style 2-parter. Forget the 1987 movie storyline.

I actually liked cobra la as a kid and I still do to a certain extent
I can see how some would not like the sci-fi side of it.But i really liked nemesis enforcer and pythona.

I liked Cobra-La a lot more in The Movie than I did the figures themselves.

I would buy a Nemesis Enforcer & Pythona two pack. AND a Royal Guard & Golobulus Deluxe two pack.

I think it's been stated that they wanted an origin for Cobra, and Buzz Dixon (I think? Help me out here people) came up with the idea as a variation of Shangri-La / hidden city myths. Cobra-La was his placeholder name, and it somehow stuck.

And let's face it, the Joes against giant monsters was certainly a way to "bigify" the movie a la the Transformers fighting against Unicron in theirs.
