So I have been watching the Sunbow series and am I the only one that couldn't understand the uncanny love for Shipwreck ? What qualifications did he have ? Like in the pyramid of darkness series he was leading the team and barking orders..i was so confused..was he a directors favorite

Short answer, it was a kid's cartoon. Long answer...um, no, that's pretty much it.

He was Buzz Dixon's favorite character. He was the comedy relief guy, so they could do more things with him than the other Joes.

It's just weird that Shipwreck for some unknown reason was dumbed down in a way in season 2, case in point the episode The Most Dangerous Thing In The World when Shipwreck, Lifeline and Dial-Tone erroneously get promoted but where he's played more of a goofball when just the season prior he's was more take charge.

He was an annoying, dumb comic relief in the cartoon (like Gung Ho or Bazooka), but in the comic he was actually a pretty cool sailor. Didn't care much for the figure, I just stuck him in the WHALE with Cutter. He certainly wasn't as cool as Torpedo (Wetsuit was cool, but didn't have an awesome weapon).

I've been re-watching the old cartoons recently, and I'm shocked just how many episodes Shipwreck is in, and how much he is used. I do think he is a great character and adds a fun element though. I think what was even more glaring, while re-watching as an adult, is how often particular Joes in general were sent out in areas that weren't their specialty at all. It's like once you're a Joe, plane/tank/boat, desert/ocean/arctic, just figure that shit out and get going. Guess they're all expected to be jack-of-all-trades.

Nope never a true fan. Maybe it's the way they met him LMAO. Actually him and Quick Kick have the dumbest intros to the team ever. How Kick didn't die barefooted and exposed chest beyond me.
