These guys really have a great take on this universe. They seem to be able to take the most eyeroll worthy characters and concepts and make them absolutely riveting. If you had told me a year and a half ago, that I'd be excited to read a Joe book with Chuckles, Serpentor, and Scoop in it I would have laughed out loud. Now I spend an entire month waiting for that next issue to hit. This book is really something special.
I loved Skullbuster and I hope he keeps showing up in the IDW verse. I also like the Range Viper (I assume that was what he was) that is helping Scoop. Wouldn't mind him staying around in this title after Chuckles comes back. Chuckles, Scoop, Chameleon, Erika, and Range Viper dude would make for a good little core casts of "heroes." |

Great issue! I almost feel as though the Range Viper(?) is going to be the next Mercer. But that's just me being crazy. I also just LOVE SkullBuster. He is a stone-cold badass.

The funny thing is...if you guys remember Scoop from the DIC series...he was a Cobra spy who decided being a Joe, was better. This new Scoop, works for the Joes...but is slowly turing into a Cobra...who will return to being a Joe again. The Viper, is totally going to be Mercer. Who else would hate Cobra more, than this guy. Skull Buster made his brother kill himself, and one failed mission and they stuck him in the psyche ward...he has seen enough and he is done. That is why he is getting Scoop out of there...so that he can finally break free.

Read it. I liked it, normally Cobra is a solid series, and i liked this arc, and really shows how Cobra is a organization really evil.

Great idea to put iconic images on the front cover that will lead people to think it is Punisher related. Next issue they should place Batman's chest logo on the cover. I bet sales will increase.

While I liked this issue, and the premise of it, it felt a little more "glossed over" then the typical Cobra issue. There were some great points in it, but overall it didn't seem to keep you on the edge of your seat the way this book normally does. Perhaps they should have started with a smaller group of recruits, and let us get to know them more. That way their deaths would mean something. I really don't care about Skullbuster at all. He's a two dimensional "bully" style villian. Typical "bad" Drill turned up to 11. So since he is so stereotypical and two dimensional, we needed someone to connect with. The recruits, The Viper, or his brother. However, we really didn't get any of that.
Again, a great premise to the story, and it's a nice set up for what lies ahead for Scoop. However, I would have liked to see a deeper story. In the end, a good plan, with mediocre execution. If this was any of the other IDW Joe books it would have been a really good issue, and if it was the ARAH book, I'd call it great, but I've come to expect a little more from this team.

I like how the Cobra series has been taking characters that were either comical in depiction or really given no depth at all before and are fleshed out in a real way. Skull buster was in DDP's run during WW3 as a survivalist who just wanted to get away from everyone, but there was no reason for his pulling away. This Skull buster is far more sadistic. It is very reminiscent of the Action Force runs portrayal of how CC would weed out recruits in the jungle trying to make their way into Cobra's employ. The author does a good job of explaining why the troops are so good and so tough - but seems like a waste of resources to kill of wash-outs instead of putting them in blue uniforms and marching them into the bullets. Apparently, this Cobra is leaner and much more effective.
