thanks steel brigade for the pics. after looking at them, i think it's a bad mold. i took tons of casting classes and this kind of crap happened to me all the time. i just appears to me, that there is a good mold variant and a bad mold variant, not intentional. when i heard this described w/out the photo, i envisioned a more deliberate "battle distressing". this, in my opinion, is just a bad casting.
i would still like either one though. |

I have 2 (One from the first cases with Beachhead and one from the later cases with wave 5 figures) Both are normal looking with small eyes

If the mold wasn't quite filled, there would be spots where the helmet lacked shape. Both the "dent" on top and the missing nasal bar would be very consistent with that. If others find the dinged helmet, then great. But in the absence of corroboration, I'm inclined to suspect a production error. now, if we get reports of serveral others finding this as well, it may be a different story. i think many are to quick to claim finding variants in general. but this leads to the ongoing debate on what makes a variant and what makes an error. i still have not seen any comprehesive look at the checklist clarifying what is what in this regard.

Well, I think a lot of variants are originally errors. No-anchor Gung-ho, for example, is probably the result of someone using the wrong mold.
But if a large run of this error is made and sold, then it counts as a variant (IMHO, of course.) So, if a few other people come forward with a similar helm, then it can probably safely be called a variant. If not, then I'd say Steel Brigade just got the 4.00 Friday figure. |

variants are the bane of my existence. because i have OCD, i have to fight the urge to try to track down every different version. but what should qualify a variant as a variant?
i think obvious changes after initial production - be it moldings or paint schemes or packaging changes. they should be categorized into different levels of variants. like an obvious change to the actual product would be a category 1 variant. same body type but different paint schemes could be a variant 2, as long as the product is sold as the same (this would exclude repaints sold in the comic packs, obviously). category 3 would be variantions in the packaging (like different characters on the card backs) and also include mold variations like this armored CC helmet. this thing needs to get under control. what makes that little difference any better than the regular version? who decides this? why shoould it cost any more? obviously, it's only worth as much as you're willing to pay for. |
