IESB has just posted up some really good news and information for the GI Joe Live Action Movie.
Quote:
This past weekend our Paramount Studios sources revealed to the IESB that the studio, with much insistence from di Bonaventura and Hasbro, are going back to elements of the earlier G.I. Joe draft. So now Skip Woods is finishing his first draft WHILE AT THE SAME TIME Lovett and Elliot are working on a new draft (their third) of their script.
We have been told that Hasbro and Paramount are taking this unusual dual screenplay route in order to fast track this production ahead of the looming WGA strike. Certain high profile director names have been floating around in the last few days as being attached to the project, but according to our sources no director has been tapped just yet.

The Battle Over G.I. Joe! The IESB Reveals the Story Behind the Headlines.
Written by Robert Sanchez Tuesday, 05 June 2007 There has been a prolonged struggle in Hollywood to bring G.I. Joe to the big screen. The IESB has jumped into the middle of the latest skirmish to bring its readers the latest news from the development battlefield. Image Devils Due America's Elite Let me take some time and help clear up some worries that some G.I. Joe fans may have. A few weeks ago, a review was posted on Latinoreview.com that sent shockwaves to Joe fans around the web, the Skip Woods (unfinished) script was not good, according to the review, it needed a lot of work. Woods had been brought on board very recently and was rushed to get the script done in seven weeks (due to a pending rights issue with the franchise). He wasn’t even complete with the first draft before it started making rounds around town. There was a lot in the line for the Studio, and as Variety revealed a couple of nights ago, the G.I. Joe rights had reverted back to Hasbro about a month ago and some believed that Paramount was in danger of losing the property. Last week the studio was able to broker a deal with Hasbro via WMA and extend it's options for a bit while longer. The Woods script was not the first screenplay that Paramount had commissioned for the potential franchise. A few years back Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura hired David Elliot and Paul Lovett to write a draft that was more of a straight adaptation than the origin story found in Skip’s draft. Elliot and Lovett had just completed FOUR BROTHERS with the studio and hoped to capture that script’s spirit of camaraderie, toughness, and fun. The resulting draft also ended up being reviewed over at LatinoReview.com with a far different result. Mayimbe from LR had this to say about the first draft from Elliot/Lovett: I’m happy to say that this draft is very solid and a great starting point from which to work with. The structure is on point and the subplots fit nicely. Reading the script made me feel like I was back in fifth grade. The action is really cool and there is even some lighthearted comedy in the script that G.I. JOE is also known for. As a longtime fan of the series, I missed out on collecting the figures and such but I am damn glad that I got my hands on this now collectible script and that we are the first to break the story of the upcoming movie to the world. It was a great read and a movie I am most eager to see. Trust me, G.I. JOE fans won’t be disappointed. Hats off to Lorenzo, the writers and Paramount for a job well done. I had no complaints of the script. Once again, a very solid draft. Best of luck to the filmmakers and the ongoing development for what will hopefully be a good movie that will please fans old and new. The main hero characters included Duke, Scarlett, Snake Eyes, Hi-Tech, Heavy Duty, Wild Bill, General Hawk and General Flagg. The villains are Destro, the Baroness, Storm Shadow and Cobra. Bottom line, Mayimbe gave it a A-, not too bad for a first draft. You can read the original review by clicking here. For some unknown reasons Paramount shelved the script and decided to take Joe on a different direction (vis a vis from an origin story to a straight adaptation). Fast forward a couple of years and we are days before the release of Transformers which I am going to go on record saying that it will make at least $700 Million in worldwide box office receipts. Won’t surprise me if it makes around $850 Million in worldwide receipts with $400 million coming from the domestic box office, call me crazy but fucking giant robots are going to rule supreme. Paramount is about to or already has realized the power behind some of the most popular 80’s cartoons, they will not let G.I. Joe slip from their grasp. Certain high profile director names have been floating around in the last few days as being attached to the project, but according to our sources no director has been tapped just yet. Stay tuned to the IESB as we continue to bring you more than just movie headlines, we bring you in depth research into the genre that we care about.

Sounds good. That Snake eyes costume looks good and accurate too, is that being used in the movie or is it a fan?

I've said it before and I'll continue to say it.........cast a group of unknowns and don't drown it in Special Effects...........and regulate Snake Eyes to his pre-'ULTRA SUPER DUPER UNSTOPPABLE GODLIKE' ninja role ;)

I'm feeling a bit better about this than a little while ago maybe di Bonaventura will notice that characters like Magneto and Dr. Doom looked as "cartoony" as Destro does and both of them were pulled off in the movies with only a degree of error (IMO) Perhaps then he won't have the absurd idea of making Cobra one man. Sounds like the fist script writers have a good idea |
