Void Rivals is interesting. The issues in the first trade set up an interesting story, but it feels a little paint by numbers. There's some interesting cameos from the transformers side of the universe in the series, but I could see how some of the more "out-of-this-world" parts of the joe lore could tie in as well but I'm not sure if they're well known enough to work.
Also of note: Hasbro recently applied for a trademark for Void Rivals toys. Maybe a pulsecon or SDCC two pack Don't hate it, but if it wasn't for Kirkman's name, and the Transformers/GI Joe connection, I don't think it would have done as well as it did. I certainly don't think that I would care, if not for the Joe connection. |

It just started. That's a bit pre-mature. Comics take a LONG time, we haven't even seen Snake-Eyes, yet.

Yeah, Void Rivals is…acceptable. Nothing I really cared for.

Void Rivals is a competent rendition of an Enemy Mine which has been seen and done before countless times in media. That's as kind, and harsh, a thing I can say of its narrative, but aside that, it's well written and the universe feels creative. I just wish the initial plot felt- well. /More./
Don't hate it, but if it wasn't for Kirkman's name, and the Transformers/GI Joe connection, I don't think it would have done as well as it did. I certainly don't think that I would care, if not for the Joe connection. Yeah, I'll politely call the early story tried and true. Hopefully it deviates more after the basic ground work was laid for the story in the first trade. The reveal towards the end of the connection between one of the races (and surprisingly not the other) to part of the transformers universe could set up something fun and different.

Ow wow Bats appearing right away and made by MARS and not Mindbender. Wonder if they will have been made using reverse engineered Transformers tech in this universe.
Nice to see Scarlet as a femme fatale spy. |

Kelly I know from some good X-Men comics that were about Rogue and Gambit's relationship. I never read it, but the people I talked to at the comic shops seemed to like it. She is writing Birds of Prey, currently, and she has a pretty good handle on those characters from what I have seen, and with characters as diverse in personality as Harley Quinn, Black Canary, Batgirl (Oracle), Batgirl (Blackbat), Zealot, Wonder Woman and Big Barda, pretty impressive. That said, some of her stuff in personal writing has felt a bit- IDK even how to explain it. 'Snobby?' But that's also opinion articles and text can be hard to read, so I fully state, it could be an impression I got and never shook that isn't valid.
As a writer, though, shorthand, writes a lot of female starring comics and does great. She got nominated for her work on Kate Bishop, the apprentice to Hawkeye, for Marvel, and did some good Jessica Jones stuff, so I genuinely like her writing. I have only a single concern for the Energon universe, and her writing is absolutely not it. VR has been very well done in my opinion. There is nothing particularly earth shattering or revolutionary about it, but it is well done so far. The plot is a bit slow, but it is going at a constant pace and the characters are likable. It definitely reads better in trade or in big swaths.
