My personal expectation for HasLabs has always been that the exact version of the item being offered will not be available again. As someone who has backed several HasLabs, I would never be opposed to Hasbro utilizing those existing molds to create more product for a line that I enjoy collecting. To be honest, I think it's wasteful and a shame if they don't ever use those assets again.

My hisstank set is maybe my most prized and expensive collectible to date. Outside of maybe a couple Hot Toys I have, (not counting expensive lego sets) the Hiss is easily the pearl of my toy collection. For them to turn around a year or so later and sell a watered down version of it, a version I might even end up preferring from a price and value standpoint, I for sure would feel a lil cheated / lied to. And I would instantly be hesitant to back any future Haslab.

We will NEVER see the HasLab HISS (or any other HasLab Project) dumbed down for "retail" release. Until someone can give me a direct quote that features a Classified team member saying it's happening I will not believe it.
EDIT: My above post populated at the same time as DB's. However his post supports exactly what I mean. |

Trends in the six inch market would tell you that vehicles don?t always sell to consumers of six inch lines. Marvel Legends hasn?t really been able to get vehicles (or really even higher priced figures) to become a consistent part of the line despite the success it?s had elsewhere. Power Rangers Lightning collection struggled similarly. Star Wars Black Series having vehicles fail with almost every attempt is still a surprise to me with how important vehicles were to the 3 3/4 toy lines and I?m sure how hasbro was quite disappointed that didn?t translate to black series.
For Star Wars, that is a bit puzzling, but given the vast, vast, VAST amount of 3 3/4" vehicles that are probably in a lot of these guys' collections, not to mention everything else SW that they could possibly collect... maybe that's part of the problem here. Star Wars collecting is just... overwhelming to me. Not something I want to get into too much, though I have delved into it a few times. I am strictly Kenner/Retro, now, it's just too much otherwise. I imagine a lot of even the most hardcore Star Wars fans are feeling overwhelmed, too. Even a guy like Steve Sansweet - he can't get EVERYTHING, can he? There's just way too much. I'm kind of with you on your last point (I accidentally deleted it while I was writing this post). I think they may well re-release a "stripped down" version at some point. Even if they state otherwise now - things can change (I remember having this same argument ad nauseam before the Star Wars sequels were announced). But I think they'll take their time doing it. If this line is still going strong in 3-5 years, that might be when they think it's "safe" to do so. By then even those of us who are fixated on the exclusivity aspect now, might be more willing to add another to the ranks. In the near term, though, the most I think we can hope for is a Crimson SMS version. Which would be pretty damn sweet, let's be honest!

What people arguing for a "gutted" Classified HasLab release are failing to take into consideration is Brand Quality. The Classified Team does not, I repeat DOES NOT want to cheapen the brand by releasing something...well...cheap. All my dudes in design and/or advertising fields chime in here. Y'all know what I'm saying.
Another thing...keep in mind the ARAH HISS was released in 1983. As GI Joe continued forward the vehicles became larger and larger. Hence why a fast attack Stun is larger than a HISS Tank. If the HISS were released in say, 89 the HISS would probably have been larger. Hence the HISS 2.

Couple things to consider... with Marvel, there isn't really much need for vehicles. With very few exceptions (the Batmobile being probably the best), there really aren't all that many vehicles in superhero comics at all - certainly nothing like in GI Joe or Star Wars. Even the ones I can name off the top of my head - the X-Men's Blackbird, Punisher's van, the Fantasticar, Night Owl's Archie (McFarlane, where are my retro Super Powers Watchmen figs, btw???)... what else, the Spider-Mobile maybe? None of these are "must haves", with the exception of the aforementioned Batmobile (and of course I'm now talking about superheroes in general, not even just Marvel). I guess with the movies you could add the Milano? But that'd be huge and again, I think most superhero fans would pass due to size and cost. For comic fans, it's all about the CHARACTERS.
For Star Wars, that is a bit puzzling, but given the vast, vast, VAST amount of 3 3/4" vehicles that are probably in a lot of these guys' collections, not to mention everything else SW that they could possibly collect... maybe that's part of the problem here. The HISS for Classified did well because it was the first real vehicle for the line. The cycles do not count. It was something different. Even the retro black and blue HISS bombed so it was not just the HISS alone that was the appeal. Eventually Hasbro will overdo it with 6 inch scale vehicles. Most collectors do not have the space for them like we did in our parents houses as kids.

If we did get a stripped down HISS - I'm down with the white, snow-themed, version. Give me CC, in cold weather gear, with it. It'd make for a solid display, with the Serpents and BATs.

Kind of feel like "stripped down" doesn't have to be stripped down.
You can get a HISS sized fairly hollow but with real working treads and even motorized movement for under $200 in 1/12 scale tanks. That's less than what a HISS has but still more than being an empty immovable hollow shell, too. But again, that could work with something like a HISS II, which was mostly a hollow shell because it had that sliding out large troop compartment. Even as a kid that never felt "empty" because of that troop compartment. |
