1983 Gi Joe are Soldiers with the Red Head and the commando-ninja fella they can't seem to get rid of.
Gi joe by the 1990's it has ALIENS & Magic in it & regular space travel. (I'm pretty sure there is Magic in Gi Joe.. all be not super obvious) p.s. I would likely say if there was one set out of all the first few years of Gi Joe in the 1980's I'd not bat an eye about them leaving out it would be the Jump set. I might see some use for it as scene setting if placed with a larger playset, but there is so very many issue with it. Like how is it transported. why didn't they attach the jetpacker management features to a vehicle instead ? Who is running base control on it.. even taking into account later characters I can't honestly think who's job it would be to run that set up... it just seems like one of the big holes in job roles the franchise suffers from a lot. We could do with some people who do functions like launch control, fire control and target designation and logistics.. the sort of "modern" military roles seem to be lacking as well as some of the really important traditional ones. Do I hate the Jump pack playset.. no, But I have no emotional attachment to it either. Perhaps longer term it might grown into a role in my collection if usec along side Helicopters or the Steel Corp as then it can be more a logistical centerpiece for command and control and refuel and re-amring (of lasers) I think if you combined it with a Bivowack or ammo dump and the like it might start to make a bit more sense. I do feel that it is an item that feels like you have to search for ways for it to make sense though. I will also say.. I suspect the jetpacks are Energon Powered too if they can stay in the air for 2 hours. So if they make a 3.75" scale Firebat Starscream perhaps he can perch on it or something. sure the 0G13 are a little drab by comparison to later years, but they were so awesome when they showed up on the scene. several figs, enough variation appearance and specialty, file cards with cool bios, then tanks, jeeps, gliders start showing up. even more fun.
when the next wave hit, snow job, torpedo, gung ho, etc., they took it up another level of awesome. yeah, joe may have hit its stride in later years, but i just can't separate them. drab or not, they're still awesome to me. to each his own, and not hating, but i wouldn't trade those guys for all of 87 to 90-whatever. |

As a 7 year old kid I always liked the JUMP pack and platform. I didn’t care about the logic of how it functioned. I just thought it looked awesome and I loved the JUMP pack and wished I had one in real life. I would still buy it if it came out in Classified and now as an adult I will out in my head how it can be used. I already do that with many of the Characters and vehicles.
For example I was never planning on buying Big Boa. I once I changed his look from a Gladiator type fighter I find a place in my head for him. I used the extra head. I took off the chest straps and gave him a leather vest and now he looks like a tough boxer Cobra Hired as a drill instructor. |

That was the point, that they looked the same. Even though Snake Eyes was all black, like Stalker who was camouflage, and Zap who was a different shade, the uniform was pretty much the same. They felt like a cohesive unit/Special Mission Force. I agree, Scarlett was the stand-out, but that's what made her awesome. You gotta remember the timeframe and where Joe had come from. The "uniform" aspect was the perfect gateway to attract kids who'd had 12" GI Joes, to ARAH. "This is still GI Joe, just a little different."
You almost seem annoyed for some reason, that people actually dig the O-13. lol Honestly still have Flash and like him and I've bought every OG13 Classified figure. |

Then again, since we couldn't afford the OG13 these were my "regular army" Joes as a kid, LOL.

No, I just never liked them that much and try to understand why people do. I got into them in 86-87, so by then the first two years of Joes were relegated to expensive stuff I saw at toy shows we could NEVER afford.
Honestly still have Flash and like him and I've bought every OG13 Classified figure. As a kid, I always wanted a set of MASH to go with my Joes. Only one I ever had was a Winchester I found still hanging around on the pegs at Pillbox Drugs. He was my team medic as I was never able to get Doc.

Which brings up a good question: Is there still "The Corps!" or any other knockoff brands trying to steel GIJoe's limelight? I can't think of anything like Corps! doing 6" figures.

I still have the MASH playset. And the Ambulence. Those things saw extensive play as "GI Joe". Klinger in Dress was always sneaking into Cobra bases disguised as a secretary!
