But now I see several different toy companies advertising alternate heads as portraits all the time. When and why?

If the work on said figure is good enough, it can and should be considered a portrait or work of art.
After all, 2-d is, and so should 3-d.

Otherwise it just another custom.

I like Roadpig being strong-fat, especially with Nemesis coming out and being giant and jacked. I'm putting my Dreadnoks and Serpentor/Cobra La guys on the same shelf, and I'm glad the two biggest dudes won't have similar physiques.

I'm pretty sure he was often depicted in the comics as being pretty ripped though? His profile shot on Joepedia is one example for instance.

They could re-work Captain Gridiron to be a lineman instead of a quarterback. Not like they spend a lot of time on backstory with Classified anyways.

Yeah, Road Pig in the comics basically just looks like he could have used the Classified Roadblock/Gung-Ho/Slaughter buck if Hasbro had aimed to make him comic accurate. I definitely am happier they made Road Pig's physique look more like the '88 artwork from the packaging and not just like RB or the comic.
