One more thing why I didn?t like Cobra La in the movie I really caught on to this as an adult. It doesn?t feel like a continuation of the 2nd Season. In the 2nd season Cobra Command has turned on Cobra Commander. By the end of the 2nd season most of them don?t want Serpentor in charge anymore. Some like Firefly and Storm Shadow want Cobra Commander back in charge. The movie starts off with everyone hating Cobra Commander. They are all in for Serpentor. It seems like when they write the movie they didn?t have season 2 fleshed out.
For GI Joe, the seeds planted in the episode you reference, for the post-Cobra organization of "the Coil", were ahead of their time. That was by accounts of the showrunners the gameplan for the post-Movie Sunbow led season three...for the Twins to be running a criminal enterprise called the Coil, abandoning largely overt military tactics, and with a rehabilitated, but semi-mutated snake-man Cobra Commander pulling the strings from behind the scenes and pointing the Joes and Coil upon one another in a bid to retake power. That woulda been something to see compared with what we got with the DIC series (Operation Dragonfire aside - I think that miniseries holds up decently compared with the rest of DIC). I sort of wish the post-"GI Joe the Movie" ARAH timeline would be revisited and updated via Hasbro productions today - reimagining and maturing the storyline for adult collectors and starting with the Coil storyline we never got. |

New Weibo leaks. Some contain items we've seen. I just saved the link Willie Pete posted (thanks dude) and refresh and scrub through every so often.
There is a VERY IG Destro looking sword scabbard at the bottom in pic 3. Pic 6 has a shoulder strap and it uses the JoePro. |

That would be interesting to see. While I don't think the franchise is comparable to X-Men, I'll be a bit oxymoronic and say I think they'd enjoy a bit of success with adding a season or two like Disney did with X-Men '97, which would be enjoyed by both old and new audiences. But they'd also have to go all-in on that as well, and not cheap out with mediocre production or bad/dated animation (we already got that with D!C).

The Joes fought robots, Transformers, ninjas, mind control, Serpentor, etc. in the OG comic so Cobra La being too "out there" for Hama is hilarious.
Way more interesting than endlessly reviving Serpentor and Young Ghengis Khan and that crap. |

There's 3 camps in GI Joe: the cartoon camp, which pretty much eat anything that's on the table, the comic camp, which follows the Arashikage mythos and characters like the Hard / Soft Master and Billy, that didn't have an 80's figure but were an essential part of the lore, and you have the file card camp, who just need the bare-bones essentials for the character, and prefer to let imagination do the rest.
I'm in the 3rd camp, but I do accept that stuff "made it's way" from the comic and the cartoon. Snake Eyes is mute because of his helicopter accident, Snake Eyes has a wolf because of the MASS Device mini-series, Destro & Baroness are a couple, etc. I acknowledged that Serpentor existed, but I really didn't need much more than that. Dreadnoks were vicious in my head-canon, not idiots. Cobra Commander was a ruthless genius, not Chris Latta. Duke was a Green Beret in Vietnam, not a Boy Scout. You get the picture. We def need 2 Haslabs a year with a quicker turnaround time. Also, instead of 4 or 5 figures per wave, they should give us 7 figures per wave. I would hate for the world to end soon and we didn't get the figures we all wanted, because people complain about too many preorders.
I agree we should get another figure per wave. Alternate between 2 Joe's/3 Cobras, 3 Joe's/2 Cobras. My concern is that at the rate they're releasing them, I'm going to be well into my 40's by the time they get to the 1990's stuff I'm looking forward to. By the end of next year, they should have most of the 85, 86, and 87 stuff taken care of and will be able to move on to 88, 89, and 90 in earnest. They've skipped around a bit, but for the most part, they've gone in a fairly linear order. IMO most of the figures from 88-90 are kinda "meh" to me. I was born at the end of 1986. My early memories of GI Joe were mostly of the 1991/1992 figures as well as the DIC cartoon, which was still airing new episodes at the time. I'm totally unapologetically a fan of 1990's GI Joe. Ninja Force, DEF, Cesspool, Mega Viper/Cyber Viper, all stuff I'm looking forward to. I understand why people don't like it, but to me, it never strayed too far away from the initial concept. When GI Joe started going to outer space to battle literal aliens, who were allied with Cobra, that was too much. I'll give ya that, but that's the only real egregious example I can think of. I'm also looking forward to them potentially doing more obscure characters. Comic book characters, characters from foreign versions of GI Joe (Red Shadows, Cobra Mortal are a couple I'd really want). For me, I have no use for 60th Anniversary figures or retro figures, I'd rather they just put those resources into focusing on the core line, but again, that's just me. Based on comments Vinnie has made, the retro line in particular is a mandate by Hasbro to be a "line expansion," fan of it or not, we're stuck with it it would seem. |
