My 72 yo aunt suddenly started collecting POPs last year. Like SERIOUSLY collecting them. I don't get it - she doesn't even know who 95% of these characters are! |

If we're being real, the real point was to sell oversized giant spring launchers and guns. Pew pew pew.

The Star Wars Pops! are bobble heads, and also the only ones with bases. So for some maybe a little bit of that Bobble Head itch gets scratched still.

I can be a bit OCD about sets of things... so I had to complete every set.. I mean I never missed a chase or a limited edition or anything. But the flip side of that is.. if I break up a set of something I have.. then it no longer matters to me.. so as soon as I started seeing some of the prices of the older ones I had.. it was pretty easy to just stop collecting and start unloading. I made almost $50K selling off that collection (way more than I invested). None of the new ones will ever catch that type of value since the market is beyond saturated.. but there was a small window these things were inadvertently a gold mine (somewhere around year 3 or 4 they took off and people were trying like mad to backfill). Some of the early ones I sold for over $1K.. it was honestly madness.. lol. They're ugly.. no real disputing that.. but they covered a lot of ground that other lines weren't covering at the time.. it was an easy way to express fandom at $9 a pop (pun intended). Luckily in my older age that "must collect them all" mentality is no longer an issue. I just buy what I like and have no weird deep rooted desire to prove my fandoms by owning tons of something. I also have a very firm.. No Funko Pops! rule now.. although I'll admit I broke it recently when they released the shirtless Jason Kelce from that Chiefs game (Go Birds!). I have less than 10 Funko Pops now.. and they're ones that have special meaning.

The weird thing about collecting/selling them is it's one of, if not the only collectible that comes in unsealed boxes. So selling something mint in the box (which could very easily have been removed.. displayed and put back without anyone being the wiser just makes that market very different for the rest of the collectible world.

That thing was hella fun. You could set up a whole bunch of figures and go Action figure bowling with that thing. Ah the age of Spring Loaded missiles and Flagg's Rubber band Catapults. Busy year though, totally forgot they also released Dino Hunters, Streetfighter 2 figs and MonstroViper at the time.

Ice Cream solder gets all the PR.
But i'd kinda like this guy at some point for Classified : https://www.3djoes.com/mega-vipers.html //// The only Pops I think I'd personally actually 'want-want' rather than 'casual want' is Ladybug & Cat Noir, other wise I have occasionally picked up a Transformers or Gi Joe one or very rarely a loose one for silly cheap 2nd hand. But I otherwise left them well alone... I am lucky the eyeless look creeped me out a little I guess. I know people who only really stopped buying Beanie Babies when they transitioned over to huge eyes and huge heads as the default look.. for them, that was a good place to stop. //// As for Battle Corps I did give that some thought before Now, and decided I was happier seeing it more as a "toy-sub-line" than as any kinda of team within a team. When I do think about it the thorny issue of Accessories often comes to mind though : for example what should be done when a 1990's version was stripped of its accessories.. do you strip it again.. or admit they made a mistake the 1st time and put them back in with the repaint...
