By far the largest year of the original toy line's run, G.I. Joe has become a toy line comprised solely of sub-lines, as the heretofore main toy line is rebranded the "Battle Corps" subset. Mega Marines, Ninja Force, and Star Brigade all have their own selection of figures, and even Capcom's Street Fighter II video game characters join the action. This year also sees the debut of the "weapons tree" - generic selections of weapons sold still on the plastic sprues.
The irony being, I think, unlike Pogs and Comic cards, some of the POPs actually hold their value. lol

It's nothing new: The older generation did it with Hummel figurines and Franklin Mint crap. I've got albums full of near-worthless stamps that a grandparent thought would help pay for college one day. |

I only consider scarcity and value when calculating the burden of obtaining a figure I want (or discussing the same on these boards). For example, I missed out on Retro Snake Eyes and MOD Zartan, so I check in on prices from time to time, hoping they will dip. A more recent example was the Target ML Warbird which I missed out on. . .twice, and thus I spent a bit of time researching price before deciding how much I was willing to overpay on the secondary market.
While I understand the secondary market only exists because people make profit on it, I would much rather exclusives and limited quantity figures end up in the hands of fans than in a warehouse waiting for a scalper to turn a profit. That being said, the secondary market actually makes collecting possible in a lot of ways. If it wasn't for eBay or buying from my local vintage toy store, I would have never gotten into Classified as the catch up would have been impossible. I remeber, as a kid, the first time I realized certain figures were no longer being made and would be impossible for me to own and how deflating that was. Today's reality is nothing is impossible to own -- assuming you are willing to cough up enough for it. In the long run, I think that is a better model for collectors, even if it feels like crap to have to pay a 50% premium because you didn't click fast enough or weren't available for the 5 minutes a product was available for open orders. |

I seriously do not understand POPs. From the looks, to the obsession, to the retail prices, to the perceived values. None of it makes a lick of sense to my mind.

I didn't like them until I got Shipwreck for Christmas, I picked up several under $10 just because I like non-Hasbro Joe merchandise but yes, I don't get the obsession either. I've got to say, Funko Serpentor is cute though.

I sort of like the Mindbender POP. Too bad they're not bobbleheads. I had a bobblehead collection as a kid and POPs are just a tease.

They're a modern, pop culture version of Precious Moments (another line my daughter gets annoyed by). :p

LOL I just found my Pog collection yesterday. Sat there a little tossing my OJ Chase Slammer at my OJ Trial Pogs in work. We who were old enough all had a good laugh...especially when I pulled out my Hackey Sack too!
