I got a Nintendo a couple years after it came out. I got to the point where I could play all the way through Super Mario Bros. pretty much with my eyes closed. With games like that, there were no saves. You had to play the entire game in one sitting to 'beat' it which could take several hours. If you turned it off you had to start all over. Weird shit now that I think about it.

A little, but not with toys. I collect art prints from a handful of artists whose work I really enjoy. Those are typically signed and numbered with low print runs. Seeing that a print I want is only going to have a run of 40 or whatever makes it more likely that I'll drop $85 to grab it on release instead of hoping that someone wants to sell one of theirs later and being at the mercy of the free market if they do. I don't care if it appreciates value afterward. Scarcity is part of the value judgment for those purchases, but only to spare myself future pain.

Toys? I don't really care. I open nearly everything as soon as I get it because the enjoyment I get from interacting with it is what I'm paying for. I did snap-buy a single OAMCC thinking it could be worth more in trade than what I paid for it, but worst case I'm left with an interesting figure from the only toy line I care about...hardly a tragedy.

Collecting baseball cards during the junk wax era taught me everything I needed to know about not speculating on "hot" mass-produced collectables. Seeing other people learn the same lesson from Beanie Babies cemented it.

I'm curious why they made so few of those compared to something like the Trubble Bubble. It seemed to be far more popular.

I don't ever intend to sell what I have, there's some items in my collection I like knowing have some collector worth but that's more just feeling good my money was well spent. There's plenty of items I have where the sentimental value's worth more to me than the price it goes for on secondary markets, every Joe in my collection has some story of my life connected to it.

I tease my daughter about her POP collection becoming the Pogs or Comic trading cards of this generation. Thankfully, she just collects what she wants, not for value. It broke her heart to see so many Jack Skellington POPs dumped into a landfill last year.
