Silent Ninja with Guns that I can pretend I am alongside dudes whose voices I know from my favorite cartoon? I'm buying. Firefly, Beachhead, Storm Shadow, and everyone that wears a helmet, we know what they sound like and who they are but they still have that cool mystique, just at a lesser degree.

The only other "character" that did that for me was the Steel Brigade, and getting that rad computer printout of my dossier/file card alongside a masked figure who's voice has never been heard allowed me that same feeling, so, yeah, Steel Brigade was immensely popular in my world, right up there with SE.

I am with you on the Steel Brigade side of things, but the comment about Hawk later being the leader does not track. He was the leader long before any of us ever even heard of Duke.

Yeah, lots of new tooling. Even the Despoiler doesn't seem like a guarantee.
