I always thought it was an odd design choice to make the helmet part of the Alley Viper non-removable. As it makes doing the later helmet and face plate versions more difficult.

I do like having the option of partial helmets as well as whole heads.
Something I've considered a lot for when they do a Rock Viper what might be the best way to approach him.

Sure they could do a straight full sculpt head and that would be the end of it - or the could do an under sculpt of a partial mask and then make the normal rock climbing or heavy helmet alternative additions to that.

That layering would have worked well in other places to such as on Red Ninjas for example.

I will admit I do occasionally get an extra of something to display / use with the other head for fear of damaging the ball joint if swapped to many times.

They went the route I assumed they would go with Raptor, but it came out great.

Kidding aside after we get Darklon, Voltar, Overlord, Cesspool, Overkill, Headman, Hannibal & Interrogator I'm quite happy to have Crystal Ball.

I also want a Retro Raptor with his "lounging around the base" soft goods cape too (ideally with an unmasked Bird too).

None of the retro characters that were masked back in the day would be unmasked in their retro versions because they're trying to match those original designs -- a deluxe fig or different version on the other hand should give us unmasked versions, especially if we know (relatively) their faces from the comic or cartoon instances where they weren't suited up.

Retro BBQ would probably look almost exactly like the BBQ we already got, it's almost like it should have been the other way around, and Cobra Island Beachhead should have come with an unmasked version alongside his with/without red beret versions.

Ok that helps clear it up a bit, thanks. I think until V4 comes, most other SE's are going to be a pass for me, 00/01 was fine, and Retro SE was great so I don't think I'd need another, V2 won't look much different aside from how you've described (presumably), and V3 is just "oh my weapon holders are white now". V4 they did some wild changes with his costume and I'd pick that up, he was one of the last Joes I had back in the original run.

I really want to see somebody repaint Raptor in a Native American look. That cowl is just amazing. Even an all white version like they had in the Order of Battle and some of the issues of the comics would look good.

I thought Crystal Ball was really creepy and cool during his brief appearances in the mid '00s Cobra comics. If I recall correctly, he kind of looked like a skinny Rob Zombie with long sharp finger attachments.
