This is a great point. Nothing I'd add to how it's worded either.

The Transformers franchise has made more than $5 billion worldwide, but how well did Transformers: Rise of the Beasts perform at the box office?

by Stephen Baker published July 31

SUMMARY
  • Transformers: Rise of the Beasts had a mixed box office performance, streaming in less than two months after release, signaling lower than expected performance.

  • The movie made $429 million worldwide, with a strong opening weekend but suffered from a steep drop in its second weekend.

  • While the movie broke even, it became the lowest-grossing movie in the franchise by far, raising concerns for the future of the Transformers series

The Transformers series is one of the highest-grossing movie franchises of all time, yet Transformers: Rise of the Beasts' box office performance was somewhat mixed. Despite the movie franchise getting new releases every two or three years since 2007, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts marks the first film in the series in five years since the prequel spinoff Bumblebee. The 2023 movie also marks the first proper Transformers movie in six years since 2017's Transformers: The Last Knight. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is still a prequel, as the movie takes place after the events of Bumblebee but still before the events of 2007's Transformers.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts Has Made Over $400 Million At The Box Office

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts made $429 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo). The 2023 movie actually had a great start at the box office, as Transformers: Rise of the Beasts' opening weekend saw the film make $61 million domestically and $110 million internationally, bringing its total opening weekend gross to $171 million. That's a great feat for the new Transformers movie, as it's the highest opening weekend the franchise has had since 2014's Transformers: Age of Extinction. However, the opening weekend number is still lower than director Michael Bay's first four Transformers movies, and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts suffered from a steep drop in its second weekend.

In its second weekend, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts' box office intake dropped by 67% domestically. Anything between a 50-60% drop is expected by studios, with anything below a 50% drop being great and anything below 60% being almost catastrophic for the studio, and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts fell into the latter. Despite being a new major Hollywood movie and part of an established IP, the movie dropped to fourth
on the box office charts in just its second week, behind The Flash, Elemental, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts eventually went on to make $429 million worldwide, which was partly thanks to holding strong internationally.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts' Box Office Means It Has Broken Even

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts' budget was $200 million, which means that the movie needed to make $400 million at the very least to break even. Movies generally need to make around 2.5 times their budgets to break even, taking into account the marketing budget and movie theaters' cut of ticket sales. Though that figure would come to $500 million when looking at Transformers: Rise of the Beasts' budget, the 2023 movie likely didn't spend anywhere close to $200 million on marketing. Given that the movie made $429 million, Paramount would have broken even with Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, but only just.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts only just breaking even marks a continuation of a 2023 movie trend. So many major Hollywood movies have only just broken even this summer, which is partly because so many movies are being released each week that they don't have any breathing room at the box office, and partly because their budgets are sky-high. The Little Mermaid made $561 million off a $250 million budget, Fast X made $740 million off a $340 million budget, and so far, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 has only made $448 million off a $291 million budget, meaning that it'll likely only just break even too.

How Rise of the Beasts' Box Office Compares To Other Transformers Movies

Optimus Primal in the woods in Transformers Rise of the Beasts

The Transformers franchise has always been a huge success, with the first movie making $709 million, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Transformers: Age of Extinction both made more than $1.1 billion each. In 2017, interest in the franchise waned, and Transformers: The Last Knight barely made $600 million. The Transformers series' box office success has led to the franchise becoming one of the highest-grossing movie series ever, grossing a total of $4.8 billion before the release of the 2023 movie. Unfortunately, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts didn't add to that total gross by much.

Even though Transformers: Rise of the Beasts had the franchise's highest opening weekend since 2014, the movie still became the lowest-grossing movie in the franchise by far. Bumblebee only made $467 million, but that was actually a huge success given the movie's relatively low budget of $135 million, especially considering it isn't a full-on Transformers movie. It's a surprise that, following the critical and commercial success of Bumblebee, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts performed so poorly. However, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts also didn't receive the same overwhelmingly positive reviews that Bumblebee did.

Rise of the Beasts Didn't Flop - But It Wasn't A Massive Success Either

Given that Transformers: Rise of the Beasts' broke even at the box office, that doesn't mean it was a success for Paramount. If a studio invests $400 million into a movie and only makes a net profit of $29 million on that movie, it's a huge problem, and it'll likely come with some major consequences. However, despite being rated "rotten" on Rotten Tomatoes, most Transformers movies are rated "rotten" and they've still made billions of dollars. The 2023 movie's underwhelming performance isn't all down to the quality of the movie, but it also has to do with the crowded market and having to compete with blockbuster films.

Nevertheless, Paramount will likely be taking this underperformance very seriously and reevaluating the direction of the Transformers series. The Transformers' future is concerning, as Transformers: Rise of the Beasts teased an epic crossover movie between Transformers and G.I. JOE, but there's a small chance that might not happen, as it'd be too expensive and wouldn't be worth the risk or the likely small return on investment.

Alternatively, Paramount could make the crossover movie with a much smaller budget a decision that could negatively impact the quality of the film, as budget cuts would affect everything from the casting process to the visual effects

The final box office numbers for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts are in, and Steven Caple Jr.'s new flick

BY RYAN NORTHRUP PUBLISHED 2 DAYS AGO

SUMMARY
  • Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is the lowest-grossing film in the franchise, earning only $436.6 million worldwide at the box office.

  • The disappointing box office performance raises questions about the future of the Transformers franchise and its plans for a G.I. JOE crossover.

  • The film's director, Steven Caple Jr., has expressed interest in directing a sequel, but one hasn't been confirmed yet. Ensuring future franchise success might mean working with lower budgets, like Bumblebee did in 2018.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts's final box office numbers have been revealed, and the new film is the franchise's lowest-grossing entry yet. Directed by Steven Caple Jr., the latest installment is the seventh live-action adaptation of the popular Hasbro toy line. The film, which stars Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback, earned mixed reviews from critics upon its release in June.

Now, a new report from SlashFilm reveals that Transformers: Rise of the Beasts' box office totals have the film earning only $436.6 million worldwide during its theatrical run, making it the worst-performing entry in the franchise. 2018's Bumblebee, which boasts the franchise's lowest production budget of $102 million, takes the second-to-last spot with $465 million. The highest-grossing Transformers movie remains 2011's Transformers: The Dark of the Moon, which earned a whopping $1.123 billion.

Will Rise Of The Beasts' Box Office Affect Transformers' Future?

With its production budget of $195 million (matching that of Transformers: Dark of the Moon), a $436.6 million box office gross is a disappointing result. SlashFilm states that the movie very likely didn't even breakeven with this amount, but it could end up turning a profit due to success on VOD platforms. Without breaking even during its theatrical run (or perhaps barely breaking even), however, it is certainly fair to question if plans for the Transformers franchise's future will be affected.

With a box office performance like this, it's clear that interest in the franchise as a whole is waning. 2017's Transformers: The Last Knight was considered something of a disappointment financially compared to its predecessors, and it managed to rake in $605.4 million. Although general interest in the franchise isn't what it once was, Paramount was evidently hoping to set up a larger connected universe, with the Transformers: Rise of the Beasts ending introducing a crossover with the world of G.I. JOE.

While the combined power of the two franchises might be enough to generate buzz, the G.I. JOE franchise itself also struggled at the box office recently. 2021's Snake Eyes, for example, was a box office bomb, grossing only $40.1 million on a budget of around $88 million. Caple Jr. has expressed interest in returning to direct a sequel to Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, but one has not yet been confirmed. If the franchise is to continue, it seems like working with lower budgets in the Bumblebee range might be the best path forward.

So let's review. Barbie and Super Mario Bros. did over a billion dollars in business, (by the way this my mantra concerning this topic and it will be repeated when the topic of live action G.I. JOE movies are being discussed, anyway.)

As I was saying Barbie and Super Mario Bros. did over a billion dollars in business, however somebody at 1027 Newport Avenue in Pawtucket thinks it's a good idea to attach G.I. JOE (which was previously mentioned,) has struggled at box to Transformers a film franchise which is waning in popularity and it's latest offering has it's lowest box office performance because a Transformers/G.I. JOE crossover will be a box office success. To quote the great Kanye West, "HOW SWAY?"

Man, talk about the proverbial throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks. This [i]Transformers/G.I. JOE crossover IS NOT A GOOD IDEA and if they were going to do it this movie should have been made 15 years ago when G.I. JOE could have benefitted from a crossover with Transformers.

The JOE isn't in the position to be attached to another "meh," or (God forbid,) a bad movie. It's disheartening for me as a JOE fan because somebody at Hasbro, (in a decision making) has to realize that it's time to bring their business relationship with Lorenzo di Bonaventura to an end.

Yes, (good or bad,) LdiB made Hasbro a gang of money in the late aughts and early teens, however, we seen the best the di Bonaventura can do with the JOEs and Transformers. As I've said before the best he's going to give us concerning a JOE film is one that's going to break even or turn a small profit.

Just like with sports teams who's g.m.s aren't getting results, the g.m. is fired, Hasbro needs to take the monetary hit in order to cash di Bonaventura out because allowing to continue to produce these films which have proven to have diminishing value with cost Hasbro money in the long run.
